Cardinal now 39-0 against Cougars
Brooke Smith scored 19 points to lead No. 5 Stanford past Washington State 72-39 on Sunday in Stanford, Calif.
Candice Wiggins had 12 points and Kelley Suminski added 11 for Stanford (10-2), which won its 19th consecutive Pac-10 home opener.
Adriane Ferguson scored 10 points to lead the Cougars (4-7), who lost their fifth straight and dropped to 0-39 all-time against Stanford.
The Cougars entered as one of the Pac-10’s top defensive teams, but had trouble stopping Smith and the taller Cardinal. Washington State allowed more than 70 points for just the third time this season.
Washington 65, California 52
Jill Bell tied a career-high with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting to lead the Huskies past the Golden Bears at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.
The Huskies (6-7, 2-1) broke open a close game early in the second half as Bell and Kristin O’Neill, who finished with 13 points, contributed key baskets.
It also helped that Cal (7-5, 1-2) shot poorly – the Bears made only 25.6 percent of their shots inside the 3-point arc.
Freshman center Jessica Lawson scored 12 points to lead California, and also blocked three shots.
The win was Washington’s ninth straight over California, and moved the all-time series record to 36-8 in favor of the Huskies. The last Cal victory was Feb. 24, 2000.
Santa Clara 79, Eastern Washington 52
Michelle Cozad hit four of Santa Clara’s 12 3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points as the Broncos (6-7) crushed the visiting Eagles (7-4).
Freshman Ashley Knight came off the bench to score 14 points to pace Eastern, which saw its six-game winning streak come to a screeching half. Jamie Chicane chipped in with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Eagles made just 18 of 63 shots from the floor (29 percent). Eastern grabbed 27 offensive rebounds and had a 50-43 edge.
