Man pleads no contest in rape case

A Deer Park real estate agent faces 20 to 25 years in prison for raping an 11-year-old girl and forcing her to have sex with her 10-year-old brother and with a dog.

David Bruce Campbell pleaded no contest Tuesday to four of nine charges he was facing in Stevens County Superior Court. In exchange, Prosecutor Jerry Wetle agreed to recommend a low-end 20-year minimum prison term.

Under state law for serious sex offenders, Campbell could spend the rest of his life in prison. A parole board will decide whether he can be released safely after he serves whatever minimum sentence Judge Rebecca Baker hands down on Feb. 22.

Campbell’s convictions – for three counts of first-degree child rape and one count of first-degree child molestation – represent all the ways Campbell was accused of abusing the girl.

Two counts of first-degree child rape, two counts of first-degree child molestation and one count of fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation were dismissed in the plea bargain.

The crimes were alleged to have occurred between Sept. 14, 2000, and July 1 of last year. Campbell was charged in Stevens County because much of the abuse was believed to have occurred there.

The victim told authorities some of the abuse occurred in homes that were for sale, but she couldn’t remember where they were. At the time, Campbell was employed by First Realty GMAC in Deer Park, where he had worked for 12 years.

Court documents said Campbell had lived in the Loon Lake area of Stevens County for many years, although his last known address was in Spokane County, in Deer Park.

The victim reported that Campbell told her “he would be in a world of trouble” if she revealed the sexual activity. Her younger brother said Campbell threatened to kill him if he told what happened, and the girl said she heard Campbell make the threat.
