When San Francisco knocked off No. 11 Gonzaga last Thursday, the Dons became the fifth conference team to beat a top-20 team this season. The others are GU, with wins over No. 14 Washington, No. 3 Georgia Tech and No. 3 Oklahoma State; Santa Clara, with a win over No. 3 North Carolina; Pepperdine, with a win over No. 17 Wisconsin; and Saint Mary’s, which beat GU when the Bulldogs were ranked No. 11. … Speaking recently on ESPN Radio, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim had this to say about GU: “If you see Gonzaga play and you don’t think they’re in the top 10, then you’re an idiot. They can win any league in the country.” … GU’s Ronny Turiaf, Pepperdine’s Glen McGowan and San Francisco’s Tyrone Riley lead the WCC in double-doubles with six apiece. … USF’s Jerome Gumbs, after being named the WCC’s player of the week, downplayed the 45 points he scored in the Dons’ wins over GU and Portland last week. “I’ve got the easy role,” the junior forward said. “I get the second- or third-best defender. I just hit shots and get to the foul line.” … WCC teams are a combined 58-14 when playing at home. USF is 10-0 at home.
