GU pair on a roll with book

Two Gonzaga University students who published a book of political essays from college students across the country are getting another national audience this weekend on C-SPAN2.

Rob Grabow and Dean Robbins were taped in Seattle last year talking about their book at the Elliot Bay Book Co. The book, “What We Think,” contains the essays of 99 college students around the country. Grabow has been organizing book talks for the authors in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Seattle.

“We’re working on one in New York at the downtown Union Square bookstore,” Grabow said.

Another, by an author who talks of lesbian issues, is planned in Lynchburg, Va., home to Liberty University, the conservative college where Jerry Falwell is a chancellor.

In their taped talk, Robbins and Grabow address the caricature of college life depicted by prominent authors like Tom Wolfe in his latest book, “I am Charlotte Simmons.” The book is a report on current college life that Grabow said is the latest example of how society dismisses college students as unthinking pleasure seekers.

Grabow said their book illustrates a much more accurate picture of what students care about. It contains essays on disability, race, single parenthood and a critique of so-called anarchists.

Grabow and Robbins have been interviewed on programs airing on CNN and MSNBC.

“We’re still in talks with the Daily Show,” whose producers will be watching this weekend’s performance to determine if they’re worthy of appearing on the fake news program on Comedy Central, Grabow said.

Their feature on C-SPAN2 (Comcast Channel 28) airs at 10 p.m. today, and Sunday at 1 p.m.
