This week’s events

All Times PDT

NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

USG Sheetrock 400

Site: Joliet, Ill.

Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 1:10 p.m.); Sunday, race (NBC, noon).

Track: Chicagoland Speedway (tri-oval, 1.5 miles, 18 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 400 miles, 267 laps.

Last race: Tony Stewart made a dramatic four-wide pass, then pulled away on a restart with nine laps left to win the Pepsi 400, his first victory in 14 starts at Daytona International Speedway. The start of the race was delayed by rain for 2 1/2 hours, and when NASCAR did start it, the cars ran the first 11 laps under caution in an effort to dry the track.

Last year: Stewart won the Tropicana 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, but it was marred by a wreck with rookie Kasey Kahne that touched off a fight in the pits. Following a restart, Stewart passed Sterling Marlin on the outside and slid in behind race-leader Kahne before tapping him into the wall. NASCAR fined Tommy Baldwin, Kahne’s crew chief, $10,000 and put him on probation for his role in the fight.

Fast facts: Stewart has three top-five finishes in his last four starts at Joliet. … Team owner Robert Yates missed the Daytona event while battling kidney stones. He is expected to return this weekend. … Kevin Harvick won the first two Nextel Cup races at Joliet in 2001 and 2002 and is the only repeat winner of this event. … The 2001 race marked the first Nextel Cup event in Illinois since 1956, when Fireball Roberts won at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Next race: New England 300, July 17, Loudon, N.H.

NASCAR BUSCH

USG Durock 300

Site: Joliet, Ill.

Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 3:05 p.m.); Saturday, race (NBC, 11 a.m.).

Track: Chicagoland Speedway (tri-oval, 1.5 miles, 18 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps.

Last race: Martin Truex Jr. passed Kevin Harvick with four laps remaining and held on to win the Winn-Dixie 250 at Daytona International Speedway. The series leader had runner-up finishes in each of the previous two events.

Last year: With his father, Terry, looking on, Justin Labonte got his first Busch victory, at the Tropicana Twister 300 in Joliet, Ill. Labonte took the lead on the final lap after Mike Wallace ran out of gas.

Fast facts: Following his Daytona win, Truex announced he agreed to a three-year contract extension with Dale Earnhardt Inc. … Jason Keller has four top-10 finishes in as many starts at Joliet. … There has not been a repeat winner in the race’s four-year history.

Next race: New England 200, July 16, Loudon, N.H.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Built Ford Tough 250

Site: Sparta, Ky.

Schedule: Saturday, qualifying, 2 p.m., race (Speed Channel, 5 p.m.).

Track: Kentucky Speedway (oval, 1.5 miles, 14 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 225 miles, 150 laps.

Last race: Todd Bodine withstood a series of late restarts, then pulled away from the pack in a three-lap shootout to win the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway.

Last year: Bobby Hamilton became the series’ first three-time winner of 2004 with his victory in the Built Ford Tough 225. The race started 55 minutes late because of rain, and the first 11 laps were run under caution as the trucks helped dry the track.

Fast facts: Toyota’s first win of the season at Kansas City ended Chevrolet’s five-race winning streak. … Kelly Sutton made her 33rd career start last weekend to set the series record for race appearances by a woman. Tammy Jo Kirk made 32 truck starts in 1997-98. … There have been 33 different lap leaders this season, two short of the record set in 2004.

Next race: O’Reilly 200, July 23, Memphis, Tenn.

CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES

Grand Prix of Toronto

Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 11:25 a.m.; Saturday, qualifying, 11:10 a.m.; Sunday, race (CBS, 9:30 a.m.).

Track: Toronto street circuit (temporary road course, 1.755 miles, 13 turns).

Race distance: 154.440 miles, 88 laps.

Last race: Paul Tracy rebounded from an early exit the year before to win the Grand Prix of Cleveland for his 30th career victory, moving him into seventh place on Champ Car’s all-time list — one behind Al Unser Jr. The previous year, Tracy stormed off the course after he was hit from behind at the course’s treacherous Turn 1, knocking the pole-sitter off track and out of the race just seconds after it began.

Last year: Sebastien Bourdais led all but nine of the 84 laps and won the Grand Prix of Toronto for his third straight victory. Canadian Tracy had trouble the entire race, crashing twice and being penalized twice by race officials.

Fast facts: Tracy has 10 top-10 finishes in 13 starts at Toronto. … Rookie A.J. Allmendinger has not finished outside the top 10 this season and is third in the standings, 26 points behind Tracy. … The polesitter has won two of the last three Toronto races and three times overall. … Adrian Fernandez won his first Champ Car race during the 1996 event.

Next race: Edmonton, July 17

FORMULA ONE

British Grand Prix

Site: Silverstone.

Schedule: Saturday, qualifying, 8 a.m. (Speed Channel, 7 a.m., tape); Sunday, race (Speed Channel, 7:30 a.m.).

Track: Silverstone Circuit (road course, 3.194 miles, 14 turns).

Race distance: 191.64 miles, 60 laps.

Last race: Fernando Alonso won for the fifth time in 10 races by taking the French Grand Prix at Magny Cours. Alonso didn’t compete in the previous race as he was one of 14 drivers who boycotted the U.S. Grand Prix on June 19 over concerns about tire safety by Michelin.

Last year: Michael Schumacher won for the 10th time in 11 races with his victory in the British Grand Prix and moved within one victory of his own season record of 11 set in 2002.

Fast facts: Alonso has a 24-point lead over Kimi Raikkonen in the standings with nine races left. … A team using Michelin tires has won nine of the first 10 races this season. The other was Michael Schumacher’s win over the depleted field at Indianapolis. … The Silverstone Circuit is known for high-speed corners and high wind due to the open nature of the course. The track was built on a World War II airfield.

Next race: German Grand Prix, July 24, Hockenheim.

INDY RACING LEAGUE

Last race: Tony Kanaan denied Dan Wheldon his fifth victory of the season, beating him to the finish line by just .012 of a second to win the Argent Mortgage Indy 300 at Kansas Motor Speedway. It was the sixth-closest victory in series history.

Next race: Firestone Indy 200, July 16, Gladeville, Tenn.
