The Hangover? Now that sounds appealing

The Spokesman-Review

In last week’s issue of 7 I went on about this phenomenal show I saw combining Belt of Vapor and Weight.

But I neglected to explain what made it so great.

In case you don’t know either band, Belt of Vapor is an ultra-intense progressive rock trio while Weight is an almost exclusively instrumental trio with cinematic swells connecting each song.

Dueling drummers Justin Walter (BoV) and Joe Preston (Weight) smoothly bled into Weight of Vapor as shared member Aaron Powell effortlessly traded bass for guitar.

At that point, the supergroup surged.

But words can’t do it justice. I think nearly everyone at that show is anticipating the next Weight of Vapor abduction (hint, hint), not to mention those who made the mistake of missing it, especially since neither band has an album out yet (HINT, HINT).

A lot of us want that Sunday night back.

Or at least a recording of it.

With that in mind, we at 7 are continuing our commitment to the best possible coverage of the local arts and entertainment scene with a new online component: The Hangover, a streaming concerts feature.

Wish it was still the weekend? Maybe you just can’t remember the weekend?

Rip open a packet of fizz tablets, strap on your headphones and listen to concerts on The Hangover at www.spokane7.com.

While The Hangover is aimed at local live music events, be sure to check www.spokane7.com for literary readings, interviews and more.

If you’ve peeked in at 7’s Sound Wave blog lately, you’ve seen downloadable audio of ex-Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic’s recent appearance at Auntie’s Bookstore.

With The Hangover, bands and music fans finally have a reason to look forward to Monday morning, as you can expect The Hangover to feature at least one new concert each week.

Of course, that is reliant on bands being generous enough to allow recordings of their live shows, plus cooperation from venues with quality soundboards that are willing to help with our mission to support local music.

Even for bands that have albums for sale or mp3s on 7 Radio, nothing is like the energy of a live show.

Some bands are meant to be heard live (if you’re heading to The Blvd. tonight, check out Coeur d’Alene jammers Uptime and you’ll see what I mean).

So head for The Hangover and have a listen while you’re working or surfing.

Go to www.spokane7.com to hear last week’s Belt of Vapor show sans-Weight.

That will have to do until the bands combine again, or at least release a recording of it (hint, hint).
