Whitworthian receives U.N. internship

Randall Johnson, a student in the Master of International Management Program at Whitworth College, has received an academic internship in the 43rd Graduate Study Programme at the United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland. Johnson is a 2004 graduate of Gonzaga University and recently was hired by The Boeing Co.

“ Laura Nelson, a 2003 graduate of Cheney High School and Spokane Falls Community College, graduated from King College, Bristol, Tenn., with a bachelor’s degree in psychology during spring commencement. She is the daughter of Lars and Charlotte Nelson of Spokane and plans to attend graduate school at East Tennessee State University in the fall.

“Amy Nelson, the daughter of Lars and Charlotte Nelson of Spokane, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Bible and a bachelor’s in intercultural communications from Columbia International University, Columbia, S.C., during spring commencement. A 2002 home school graduate as well as a 2002 graduate of Spokane Falls Community College, Nelson plans to work as a missionary overseas.

“Matt Corley graduated from Gonzaga University at the end of spring semester with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature and a B.A. in public relations. He is the son of Tom and Evelyn Corley of Spokane, a 2001 graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School, and plans to teach English as a second language through the TESL Program in Rome next year.

“Mons Lee has received a $1,200 Dr. J. J. Veit Memorial Scholarship through the physics department at Western Washington University, where he is currently a student. He is a 2000 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and the son of Donna and Alan Lee of Spokane.

“Ryan Mountjoy of Veradale was awarded second honors at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., during spring semester.

“SonCa Vu, a Gonzaga Preparatory School student, has received the 21st Century Leadership award from Wells College, Aurora, N.Y. The award is given to high school juniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership ability in high school and in community activities.

“Marta Soden of Spokane graduated spring semester summa cum laude as a Mary Lyon Scholar from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass., with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

“Jeremy Wynne, a Spokane resident, graduated with a master’s degree in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary during spring commencement.

“Spokane resident Emily Tremaine has been named to first honors on the dean’s list at Clark University, Worchester, Mass.

“Jillian Caples has received a $2,000 scholarship from the Avon Foundation to be used for 2005-2006 academic year. Caples is a resident of Spokane and is an Avon representative.

“Jacqueline Nuechterlein, a 2001 graduate of Lakeside High School, received a Bachelor of Arts in fine arts with an emphasis in two-dimensional media from Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, during spring commencement. The daughter of Carl and Sandy Nuechterlein of Nine Mile Falls, she also is the recipient of the School of Arts Teaching Award for Drawing.

“ Spokane Public Schools has chosen four area graduating seniors to enter apprenticeship programs. The selected students will work on the new construction projects at Lidgerwood Elementary, Lincoln Heights Elementary and Ridgeview Elementary Schools.

Eric Anthony, a graduate of Rogers High School, and Jesse Champion, a North Central High School graduate, are both Skills Center students and have been selected to join the Ironworkers Apprenticeship Training Program.

Ferris High School graduate and Skills Center student Ian Peterson has been chosen to participate in the Electrical Workers Training Program, and Jake Richards, a graduate of North Central High School, will join the Sheetmetal Workers Training Program.

“Panhandle Health District recently honored area individuals, organizations and businesses with Health Hero Awards in recognition of their efforts to promote, enhance and protect the health of North Idaho residents during 2004.

Winners were chosen based on nominations from community members.

Becky Stein, Osburn, serves as the board chairperson for the Community Health Clinic in the Silver Valley.

John Beck, Bonners Ferry, serves as the only elementary physical education specialist in Boundary County.

Dr. Wayne Ellenbecker, Coeur d’Alene, volunteers his expertise to the early detection of vision problems in children and is involved at Panhandle Health with vision screening for infants and toddlers. He refers those with more serious issues to a pediatric ophthalmologist rather than his own practice.

Fred Weber and Charlayne Streeter of competitive Fitness and Physical therapy in Coeur d’Alene were honored in the business category. The duo enlisted feedback from area health professionals to develop innovative physical therapy programs for the community, including Smart Moves for basic fitness, and Kid Moves for educating kids about obesity.

“Area Toastmasters Clubs recently earned recognition during the group’s District 9 spring conference in Walla Walla.

Mark Cochran, president of the Coeur d’Alene club, took second place in the speech evaluation category and also was named as the new area D-3 governor to serve all of the North Idaho Toastmaster clubs.

Debra Allison, will serve as president of the Greater Sandpoint Toastmasters.

Matt LaVigne, president of Selling North Idaho Toastmasters, the newest chartered club in District 9, was awarded the club’s official banner from Toastmasters International.

Todd Kavanagh, president of the Post Falls Toastmasters, advanced through three levels of competition to compete in the International Speech category at the district level.

“Area loggers recently completed the three-day Logger Education to Advance to Professionalism program taught by the University of Idaho Extension office.

LEAP fulfills a requirement of Idaho’s new Pro-Logger Program designed to recognize and document area loggers’ commitment to professionalism.

Hutton is a 2001 graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School and will possibly pursue graduate work at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.
