Mead teammates lead East win

Mead setter Lacey Anderson had 34 assists and the match-winning kill into the left corner Thursday night as the East defeated the West 25-21, 22-25, 25-23 in the 4A/2A match of the 20th Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association All-State series for seniors at Fife High School.

Anderson’s teammate, Rachael Schurman, the State 4A Most Valuable Player, added 12 kills. University High teammates Mandy Daniels and Daidre Mendenhall combined for 11 kills, and Colville’s Nikki Bardwell added three kills.

The series continues today at Selah High and Saturday at Mead High.

•In the 1A/B match, Kalama’s Rashelle Davenport had 14 kills to rally the West to a 24-26, 25-22, 25-12 win over the East. State 1A MVP Amy Bruya of Colfax, headed to Southern Virginia University, had nine assists for the East. Garfield-Palouse’s Monica Boone, set to play at Wyoming, added seven kills for the East.

•Mercer Island’s Callie Webster and North Idaho College-bound Lynnea Braun of West Valley-Yakima combined for 27 kills to lead the East to a 27-25, 19-25, 25-23 win over the West in the 3A match.

Football

Five Eastern Washington University players were selected to the I-AA.org preseason All-American team released Thursday.

Eagles named to the first team were middle linebacker Joey Cwik (Mead High), quarterback Erik Meyer (last year’s Big Sky Conference Offensive Most Valuable Player), wide receiver Eric Kimble and offensive tackle Rocky Hanni. EWU cornerback Isaiah Trufant was named to the third team.

•The sixth annual Calam Shrine North/South All-Star Football Classic will be Saturday at the University of Idaho’s Kibbie Dome.

For a third straight year, the All-Star Classic features two games – 8-man and 11-man contests. The games will pit the 2005 graduates from District I (the five northernmost counties) and District II (schools from Potlatch to Riggins, plus Washington schools Clarkston and Asotin). The 8-man game will begin at 2 p.m., followed by the 11-man game.

Proceeds from the games will help orthopedic, burn and spinal rehabilitation patients cared for by the Shriners Hospitals for Children throughout North America.

Players selected to the 11-man North team are: Brandon Landrum of Kellogg; Joey Stark and Jeremy Patterson of Priest River; Travis Stolley, Ken Koehler and Matt Bennett of Bonners Ferry; Kody Winter, Matt Hohensee, Joe Wolfe, Jake Wolfe and Gabe Le of Coeur d’Alene; Ren Jones of Timberlake; Travis Harmon of Lake City; Kam Kiefer of Lakeland; Ben Felix, Ryne Eberlin, D.J. Moore and Jed Overracker of St. Maries; Blake Mahler, Dan Parrish, Chad Denny, Eric DeMers, Brian Resso and Sean Lissy of Sandpoint. The head coach is John Yegge of St. Maries.

Players selected to the 8-man North team are: Sean Angle, Jake Strange and Paul Norris of Wallace; Ben Wheeler, Clayton Hewitt, Mike Johnson, Mario Spina and Lance Siple of Clark Fork; Tony Kraack and Adam White of Kootenai; Mike Sifford, Andrew Sonder, Tim Wolfe and Keith Whipple of Lakeside; Josh Quincy, Trevor Campbell, Donald Cansino and Brad Shaw of Post Falls Christian. The head coach is Frank Hammersley of Clark Fork.

Basketball

High school teams from around the Northwest, plus Alaska and Utah, will compete Friday through Sunday at the second annual Fire and Fall Back tournament at the Warehouse Athletic Facility, on Hamilton Street across from Gonzaga University.

The boys’ division includes Gonzaga Prep, Ferris, West Valley and Utah 3A champion Juan Diego Catholic. University, Lewis and Clark and Central Valley lead the girls’ division.

Admission is $5 a day or $12 for a three-day pass. Kids younger than 10 are free.

Rodeo

Cheney cowboy Ryan Gray received a no score during the second go-round of bareback riding at the Calgary Stampede.

Gray, who finished second during Saturday’s first go-round, was penalized for using his free hand to slap his horse, Shootin’ Stars.
