Percival likely out rest of year

Associated Press

NOTES

Detroit Tigers reliever Troy Percival likely will miss the rest of the season because of a partial muscle tear in his right forearm.

Percival, signed by the Tigers during the off-season to be their closer, went on the disabled list for the second time this season on July 15, a move retroactive to July 10. He was examined Monday by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who conducted an MRI exam and said Percival must rest for two months. It is not known if he will need surgery.

Mostly because of health issues, Percival, 35, did not perform to expectations. The former All-Star was 1-2 with a 5.76 ERA and eight saves in 11 opportunities over 25 innings. He went on the disabled list on May 10 with the same injury, returning to the lineup on June 5 before re-aggravating the injury on July 9.

Gardenhire apologizes

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire had a discussion with baseball’s head disciplinarian, Bob Watson, regarding his postgame tirade about umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.

Gardenhire said he was sorry for the way he handled the situation, which began with an ejection for arguing Wendelstedt’s high strike call and ended with a profanity-filled rant to reporters in his office following Minnesota’s loss to Baltimore on Monday.

“That’s the wrong thing to do,” Gardenhire said before Tuesday night’s game. “No matter how frustrated you get, you should never let it get to that point.”

“Kansas City infielder Tony Graffanino was not with the Royals in Cleveland while the Royals attempted to trade him to the slumping Red Sox, reportedly for Single-A left-hander Juan Cedeno and Triple-A outfielder Chip Ambres.

“Athletics designated hitter Erubiel Durazo will undergo season-ending surgery on his left elbow, and is expected to be sidelined an additional nine to 12 months.

“Yankees outfielder Ruben Sierra was put on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring injury sustained on a go-ahead hit the night before.

“Scott Rolen was back in the St. Louis Cardinals’ lineup, a day after strength tests showed no significant problems in his surgically repaired left shoulder.

“Arizona catcher Kelly Stinnett was placed on the 15-day disabled list, a day after scoring the winning run in the 11th inning against Florida.
