Art sought as tribute to Mike Cmos

The Spokane Arts Commission is looking for artists, architects or teams of artists from the region to create works to enhance site improvements at the city Wastewater Treatment Facility. The art will be a tribute to Mike Cmos, the facility employee who died in an accident there last year.

Application deadline is Aug. 30. Applicants must live in Washington, Idaho or Oregon.

For more information, call Karen Mobley at the Spokane Arts Commission, 625-6079, or e-mail kmobley@spokanecity.org.

Urban art

The West Boone Center Head Start building, 2427 W. Boone Ave., is getting a makeover.

Artist Tom Quinn and several volunteers began painting a large, color-by-number mural on the side of the building Friday.

The project is part antigang measure, part community pride, part neighborhood relations and part memorial to Katie Schmidt, a 23-year-old woman who died of cancer last year. Her mother, Pamela, works at the center.

The project was conceived by the center’s manager, Bernadette Powers, who wanted to raise the center’s profile in the neighborhood and let nearby residents know about the family support services and programs it provides, often for free for income-eligible families.

For information about the mural or the center, call Powers at 279-6911.
