Don’t get burned by sun’s rays
Summer has come to the area with a vengeance, and just about everyone I know has been taking advantage of the weather.
With more outdoor activities and exposure to the sun, we’ve all been suffering a little from sunburn.
Of course, had we planned ahead and slathered ourselves with sunscreen before we hit the outdoors, we wouldn’t be itching and stinging and whimpering right now.
According to webmd.com, most sunburns—red, tender skin—are really first-degree burns of the outer layer of skin. These sunburns can be treated at home with simple remedies: cool cloths, cool showers or baths and soothing lotions with aloe vera or a 1 percent hydrocortisone cream that can help with the pain.
Dehydration is also a symptom of sunburn, so be sure to drink lots of water.
Sunburns can be very serious in babies, small children and older adults, since their skin is more sensitive and they have higher risks for other health problems.
Some medications also increase your sun-sensitivity so be sure to check with your doctor if you’re on permanent meds.
Severe sunburns, of course, should be treated by a doctor.
