GU engineering students cited for water-sewer system design
Graduating civil engineering students at Gonzaga University earned an honorable mention award for a project they completed for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency P3 (People, Prosperity and the Planet) competition in May. The students are Kevin Boger, Tyler Jantzen, Brendon Langenhuizen, Mark Raleigh and Katherine Rowden.
The group won a $10,000 grant last year and spent the academic year researching its project, which involved designing a water and wastewater treatment system for a school in Azove, Benin. The West African school currently lacks potable water and sanitation facilities. The Gonzaga Chapter of Engineers Without Borders is trying to raise money to build the system.
“ Justin Gates of Spokane has been selected to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. He will join 200 middle school students who have been nominated by one of their teachers to attend.
“ Six North Idaho high school students recently attended the University of Idaho’s junior engineering, math and science summer workshop. The experience is open to juniors and seniors, who must apply for a limited number of slots. Acceptance is based on math and science classes taken, grade-point average and an essay.
