Actually, prison can be a pretty lonely place, too
Russell Crowe apologized Wednesday for throwing a telephone at a hotel concierge, saying he reacted poorly to being a lonely family man away from home. “This is possibly the most shameful situation I’ve ever gotten myself in in my life, and I’ve done some pretty dumb things in my life,” Crowe told David Letterman.
“So to actually make a new number one is spectacularly stupid.”
The Australian actor, in New York to promote a new movie, was angered by a malfunctioning phone at 4 a.m. Monday, so he threw it and struck Nestor Estrada in the face. The cut required stitches.
“Hopefully at some stage, I’ll be able to apologize directly to Nestor but at the moment, he’s not answering his phone,” Crowe said.
Being a husband and father away from home is “a level of abject loneliness that I’m not used to at all,” added Crowe, who has a 17-month-old son with actress wife Danielle Spencer.
He faces up to seven years in prison for second-degree assault, not the four years previously reported.
More frisky business for Cruise
Tom Cruise, meanwhile, poked fun of himself on Wednesday’s “Tonight Show.”
Cruise jumped on Jay Leno‘s couch and pumped his arms as he mocked his exuberant display of affection for Katie Holmes on a recent “Oprah Winfrey Show.”
“When I start to think about her, things happen,” he told Leno. “So, cease talking.”
After calming down, Cruise said that he was looking forward to traveling, scuba diving and “spending the rest of my life” with Holmes.
“I’m just really happy,” said Cruise. “She’s a terrific lady, she’s a great lady.”
Well, we know what she’s not going to say
“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” co-stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who have denied tabloid reports that they’re a couple, briefly visited Mexico City on Wednesday for the premiere of their new film.
Pitt called Jolie “a firecracker,” adding: “You never know what she’s going to say.”
Jolie in turn called Pitt “a great person,” “very down-to-earth and very funny.”
But when asked if he’s marriage material, she just giggled – and moved on.
He just needs a good kick-start
Martial-arts star Steven Seagal has been sued for $14 million for allegedly delaying production on two movies.
Seagal showed up late and left early while shooting “Today You Die” and “Mercenary,” routinely rewrote and changed scripts on the set and brought an entourage that interfered with film crews, the suit claims.
The 54-year-old actor is best known for such films as “Under Siege” and “Exit Wounds.”
George’s revenge of the six-o
“Star Wars” director George Lucas received the American Film Institute’s life-achievement award on Thursday.
AFI actually approached him more than a decade ago about the award, said Lucas, 61.
“I said, ‘You know, I’m too young. Look, I’m not ready yet,’ ” he said. “Then they came back again, and I said, ‘Look, wait until I’m over 60. Then I’ll do it.’ As soon as I turned 60, they called me.”
