Thursday’s games
Interleague
Tigers 3, Padres 1: At Detroit, Chris Shelton hit his first homer of the season and added an RBI single in a win over San Diego. Jeremy Bonderman (8-4) allowed a Dave Roberts solo homer but was in control the rest of the way. Bonderman allowed four hits, striking out four and walking three in seven innings. The Padres fell to 0-6 in Detroit. In the 1984 World Series, they lost all three games at Tiger Stadium.
Mets 9, Athletics 6: At Oakland, Mike Piazza ended the longest home run drought of his career, Carlos Beltran hit a three-run shot and New York avoided a three-game sweep by beating Oakland. Beltran’s eighth homer, a long drive to right off Ryan Glynn (0-3) in the fifth, put the Mets ahead. It was his first for New York in a game not started by Pedro Martinez.
Indians 2, Rockies 1: At Cleveland, Kevin Millwood (2-4) earned his 100th career victory, and Cleveland pushed its winning streak to a season-high six games with a sweep of Colorado. Grady Sizemore and Coco Crisp had RBIs off Jamey Wright (4-6) for Cleveland, who has won 9 of 10.
Yankees 6, Pirates 1: At New York, Randy Johnson reached double digits in strikeouts for the first time this season and pitched a five-hitter, leading the Yankees to a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh. Hideki Matsui hit a two-run homer off Oliver Perez (5-5), Jason Giambi had a long RBI double and Gary Sheffield added a two-run double.
Giants 14, Twins 7: At Minneapolis, Omar Vizquel’s fifth hit of the game drove in the tying run in the eighth inning, and Pedro Feliz’s two-run single in the ninth against former teammate Joe Nathan lifted struggling San Francisco over Minnesota. Nathan (1-3) allowed four runs in the Giants’ seven-run ninth. Jason Christiansen (3-1) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win for the Giants.
Royals 9, Dodgers 6: At Kansas City, Alberto Castillo’s two-run double keyed a six-run sixth inning, and Kansas City finished a three-game sweep of Los Angeles. Castillo had three RBIs, and reliever Mike Wood (3-2) earned the victory with two innings in relief of Zack Greinke. Only one of the six runs in the sixth against Derek Lowe (5-7) was earned.
National League
Braves 5, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, John Smoltz won for the third time in his last four starts, striking out nine in another throwback performance, and homers by Rafael Furcal and Marcus Giles sparked Atlanta to victory over Cincinnati.
