Mexican variety store relocates, changes name

La Piñata is a flavorful store rich with south of the border traditions, toys and treats.

The store carries authentic woven cotton blankets, colorful maracas and vibrant piñatas, which line the ceiling. Specialty foods include sangria-flavored Mexican pops and Goya spices.

“I sell a lot of piñatas for parties. A lot of Americans like the dried peppers and spices,” said Apolonia Ocampo, who owns the store with her husband, Jose Ocampo.

The Mexican variety store – once called La Popular – recently moved from University and 16th Avenue to 13515 E. Sprague Ave.

“A lot of people don’t know that we moved here,” she said, adding that the visible location adjacent to Spokane Teacher’s Credit Union is attracting new customers.

In addition to the move and name change, La Piñata expanded its selection of gifts and clothes, including sombreros, Mexican leather sandals, gauze shirts and children’s pinafores with traditional embroidery.

Customers also can find a range of recordings by popular Mexican musicians and Spanish language DVD movies.

La Piñata is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The phone number is 922-1118.

Soups and Subs in Millwood

Valley residents lamenting gray skies have a new choice for hot soups on cold days.

Spokane Subs opened last week at Argonne and Trent in Millwood. The menu offers eight different daily soups, four salads, topped baked potatoes and a host of subs.

“We have so many different choices,” said Angela Azzinnaro, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Lee Azzinnaro.

The couple started Spokane Subs at Ruby and Sharp, six years ago, and sought a Valley location for several years before deciding on the Millwood spot.

Spokane Subs’ décor and menu items celebrate the finer elements of the Lilac City, including landmarks and events.

Patrons can order subs dubbed “Imax” (a.k.a. chicken salad) or enjoy a turkey, ham and pineapple “Expo.”

The restaurant offers catering, and free delivery is available for orders of more than $10 that fall within a four-mile radius.

Spokane Subs is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Web business moves to incubator

Spokane Web Communications is expanding from a home-based office into an incubator suite at Liberty Lake.

The 300-square-foot space, at 1421 N. MeadowWood Lane, is provided rent-free for growing businesses through Greenstone Corp. and the city of Liberty Lake, which collect just a small fee for utilities.

“It will allow us to expand and to better support our clients,” said Jennifer Ferrero, who owns the business with Tony DeStefano.

Some of the company’s larger customers include Central Valley School District, cities of Liberty Lake and Cheney and Spokane County Air Pollution Control Authority.

Spokane Web Communications designs and develops Web sites tailored for specific information and communications needs.

Sites are customized for easy access by users, who may be online shoppers or parents looking for information about their children’s school activities.

The sites are also engineered to make life easier for business owners and content managers, who update the information on the sites, she said.

“We really want to make it easy for people to do business online.”
