Furrer brings home hardware

Amanda Furrer of Spokane won five medals at the women’s USA National Rifle Championships, held June 19-24 at Fort Benning, Ga.

Furrer, 14, won J3 division – 14 and under – gold in all three competitions: air rifle, small bore and small-bore prone.

Furrer added a fourth gold medal in the women’s A class small-bore prone, the second-highest of six classifications. Furrer’s fifth medal was a bronze in the women’s A air rifle.

These national championships, conducted to international standards, help the U.S. national team coaches in their selection of shooters for the U.S. Pan Am games, as well as the upcoming 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Baseball

Mike Hauschild of the Cannons had a strong showing last week in Senior American Legion play, with 11 hits in three Cannons wins on Wednesday and Thursday.

Hauschild went 9 for 9 in a doubleheader sweep of the Walla Walla Bears on Wednesday, nailing five hits and a double in the 15-6 opener and adding four hits and a double in the 5-3 nightcap.

Kris Henderson, who had six hits in the doubleheader, added four hits and three doubles in the second game, his third putting the Cannons ahead in the top of the seventh inning.

Hauschild added two more hits Thursday, including a home run, in an 11-1 win over the Blue Devils.

A.J. Proszek of the Bandits also had a big game against the Blue Devils, his in an 11-1 win on Tuesday. Proszek had three hits, including a double and a home run.

“In Junior American Legion play Tuesday night, a squeeze play by Ferris’ Chad Berland scored Josh Dawley with one out in the top of the ninth to defeat Shadle Park 5-4.

Mead also won on Tuesday, though in not such dramatic fashion. John Mancheni had five hits, including three doubles, and Kip Johnson added a fourth-inning grand slam to defeat St. Michael’s-St. George’s 25-1 in five innings.

Mead also competed in the Ed Gallo Memorial Tournament at Whitefish, Mont., this week, earning wins on Wednesday and Friday. After falling 8-3 to Whitefish in its opener Wednesday, Mead defeated Kootenay 15-14. Mead rallied for four runs in the seventh, capped by a Shea Courtney single for the win. Matt Walsh went 4 for 4 to lead Mead.

Johnson had four hits of his own in a 22-3 win Friday over the Laurel Dodgers, with a double and two homers.

“After a strong showing at the All-State baseball games on June 18-19, 2005 Mt. Spokane grad Cameron Joslyn earned a shot to represent Washington in last weekend’s Cascade Classic in Vancouver, Wash., which pitted the state’s top 20 players against the top 20 each from Idaho and Oregon.

Joslyn went 1 for 4 on the weekend with a pair of RBIs and also struck out two in one inning on the mound. Washington defeated Idaho 10-9 and lost to Oregon 10-6.

Joslyn earned a spot on the team by earning defensive MVP honors at the All-State games. He played nine innings of errorless baseball at shortstop and third base and threw three innings of no-hit ball with four strikeouts. He also went 3 for 6 at the plate with a double, an RBI and three runs.

“All-Greater Spokane League pitcher Brian Kranches of Shadle Park has received a scholarship to play both baseball and football at Minot State University, an NAIA school in Minot, N.D. Kranches was also a second team All-GSL defensive back as a senior.

“Ten-year-old Dan Whittaker of Spokane placed fourth in the 9-10 age group at the Pepsi MLB Pitch, Hit & Run Team Championship at Seattle’s Safeco Field on June 19.

Football

Visiting prep football standouts from the class of 2005 arrived Sunday for Friday’s High School All-Star Football Summer Classic presented by the Washington State Football Coaches Association.

Nearly 70 athletes, including 18 all-state selections, will compete in the game, held at 7 p.m. at Central Valley. Clarkston head coach Dave Curtis will coach the East, while Steve Gervais of Skyline will lead the West. “I coached a few years ago and have been to them,” said Curtis. “It’s a lot of work, but a lot of fun.”

Gervais is in his third go-around as a head or assistant coach.

“My intent is to make this a great, fun experience,” he said.

The players have a busy week of two-a-day practices (9 a.m. and 3 p.m.) at CV prior to the game. Meals are being provided by area restaurants and community members, including the Spokane Regional Sports Commission, which sponsors a luncheon tomorrow at the Mirabeau Park Hotel in Spokane Valley.

Softball

Spokane Eagle Sportswear won the championship of the Fort Dent Starfire Father’s Day 18-U softball tournament in Tukwila, Wash.

Eagle Sportswear, now 13-2 overall, won five straight games in the tournament, including twice over High Voltage, 6-0 in pool play and 5-3 in the semifinals, and the Enumclaw Sting 4-1 in pool play and 12-1 in the finale.

Eagle Sportswear also defeated the Spokane Mustangs 8-2 in pool play.

Morgan Thomsen went 3 for 3 with a home run and drove in five runs in the tourney opener over High Voltage. She batted .500 and had seven RBIs for the tournament. Shelli Dodge led the team with a .540 batting average and drove in four runs.

Pitchers Jessie LaPlante and Linse Vlahovich were both 2-0, LaPlante allowing a total of three hits and Vlahovich pitching a no-hitter.

Climbing

Melissa Main of Lewis and Clark and Bryan Brenize of Gonzaga Prep will be competing in this weekend’s USA Climbing national championships in Boston.

Main finished second in the Female Youth B division at this month’s divisional meet in Portland, while Brenize finished third in Male Youth A.

Golf

Washington State 4A champion Nick Grigsby of Central Valley finished fourth in Monday’s U.S. Junior Amateur regional qualifier at Manito Golf and Country Club.

Thirty of the region’s top under-18 players competed for two national spots. Mitchell Fox of Okotoks, Alberta, won the tournament with a 36-hole total of 10-under-par 132. Alexander Moore of Richland earned the second spot with a 5-under 137.

Grigsby’s 2-under 140 put him in a playoff for the first alternate position, which he lost to Douglas Fortner of Tustin, Calif.

The U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be held July 18-23 in Longmeadow, Mass.

Volleyball

The Spokane Sky Tsunami 13-U team has become the fourth local team to qualify for this week’s Junior Olympics in Salt Lake City.

The Tsunami have spent the season competing in 16-U tournaments, in which they have finished as high as third place.
