American League
Yankees 6, Orioles 4: At Baltimore, after a pregame message from owner George Steinbrenner, the New York Yankees responded. Pinch-hitter Bernie Williams drove in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, and New York rallied from a three-run deficit to hand Baltimore its sixth straight defeat. It was the ninth time this season New York has won after trailing by three runs.
Devil Rays 4, Blue Jays 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Hideo Nomo pitched seven strong innings and Aubrey Huff hit a three-run homer, leading Tampa Bay past Toronto. Nomo picked up just his third win in his last 13 starts. Huff’s three-run shot snapped a 14-inning scoreless streak for Tampa Bay.
Indians 7, Red Sox 0: At Boston, Kevin Millwood pitched six innings of three-hit ball and Travis Hafner had three extra-base hits to give Cleveland a victory over the Red Sox, snapping Boston’s seven-game winning streak.
Angels 13, Rangers 3: At Arlington, Texas, Bartolo Colon won his 10th straight start against Texas, and Vladimir Guerrero hit a home run to help Los Angeles extend its winning streak to seven with a victory over the Rangers. Adam Kennedy hit his first home run of the season, and Juan Rivera had four hits for the Angels.
Twins 3, Royals 1: At Minneapolis, Joe Mays pitched eight innings and Minnesota beat Kansas City, sending the Royals to their seventh straight loss. Mays, winless in six starts, allowed six hits, struck out three and walked none.
National League
Braves 7, Marlins 2, (8): At Miami, Julio Franco, 46, hit his eighth career grand slam, a pinch-hit shot, and Horacio Ramirez pitched streaking Atlanta past Florida in a game called during the eighth inning because of rain. Atlanta has won nine of 11 to move within 2 1/2 games of first-place Washington in the N.L. East.
Astros 11, Rockies 5: At Denver, Lance Berkman hit a home run and drove in three runs, Wandy Rodriguez pitched strong into the seventh, and Houston beat Jamey Wright for the 12th straight time in a victory over Colorado. Every Houston starter, including Rodriguez, had a hit by the fourth inning.
Dodgers 5, Padres 4: At Los Angeles, Jeff Kent was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, J.D. Drew and Mike Edwards hit run-scoring doubles and Los Angeles beat San Diego. Rookie right-hander D.J. Houlton, the only Los Angeles starter with a winning record (4-1), allowed four runs and five hits with five strikeouts in seven innings, helping trim San Diego’s division lead to three games over idle Arizona and 5 1/2 over the Dodgers.
