S-R Oscar contest actually has two top winners

The Spokesman-Review

The results of this year’s Spokesman-Review Oscar contest turned out to be closer than we thought.

After we originally announced winners on March 2, we learned that answers in two categories were counted incorrectly because of a computer-related problem. So all ballots cast were re-counted.

The final tally showed three entrants who correctly guessed the winners in 19 of 24 Oscar categories: Megan Albertus and Drew Piper of Spokane and Donald Lacky of Tacoma.

Because they both got the tie-breaker right – guessing that “The Aviator” would win the most Oscars, with five – Albertus and Piper tie for first place, and each gets $100 in movie passes. (We previously announced Albertus as winner and Piper as runner-up.) Lacky receives a second-place award of $50 in passes.

Six other entrants had 18 categories correct, but only one – Scott O’Neill of Seattle – got the tie-breaker right. He receives the third-place award of $25 in movie passes.

Based on our original, incorrect information, Alfred Olsen of Spokane previously was announced as the third-place winner. That prize also will be honored.
