Compiled from staff and wire reports The Spokesman-Review

A man was accidentally shot Sunday while riding an ATV near target shooters, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday in a news release.

The man, 65, was riding about 4:30 p.m. in the area of Power Line Road and Chilco Road south of Athol, deputies said. He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where he is in stable condition. His name was being withheld Sunday pending notification of family. No further details were available late Sunday.

Police find carjacking vehicle

Des Moines, Wash. A vehicle stolen during a carjacking in which a Boeing Co. worker was killed was recovered Sunday by King County sheriff’s detectives.

The black Ford Mustang belonging to Ron Whitehead was found around 6 a.m. parked near a trash receptacle in a parking lot behind an assisted-living center. Local television stations showed the vehicle being towed from the lot at South 223rd Street and 28th Avenue South.

Investigators had been looking for the car since Whitehead, 62, of Des Moines, was found shot and killed Friday at an intersection near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Witnesses told investigators they saw him being pushed from the 2000 Mustang by a man who then sped off in the vehicle.

The car was located roughly 3 miles south of where Whitehead was killed.

“It’s huge. We really wanted to find this car. We’d like to find the suspect but we’ll start out with the car and hopefully it will lead us to the suspect,” said Sgt. John Urquhart, spokesman for the King County sheriff’s office.

Detectives used dogs Sunday to search the area where the car was found. Urquhart would not say whether the gun used in the shooting was recovered.

No arrests have been made.

Arrests made in shooting

Auburn, Wash. Police have arrested and jailed two men for investigation of first-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Dee Anthony Davis of Federal Way, who was shot while driving on Washington 167 more than a week ago.

Michael Allen Rideaux, 23, Tacoma, was arrested Sunday without incident at his parents’ home in Tacoma and jailed in Auburn, Cmdr. Bob Karnofski of the Auburn police said.

Rick Allen Rae, 21, Spanaway, was arrested Thursday at his parents’ home in Spanaway on an unrelated misdemeanor charge and was taken to the Renton jail, Karnofski said. Detectives went to Renton Sunday and transferred him to the Auburn jail for the murder investigation, he said.

A third suspect remained at large. Detectives said their investigation showed that Davis and the third suspect had been involved in a fight at a party in Pacific, then separated and quickly left. Davis’ vehicle was followed by a car with three men who were armed with a Russian-made assault rifle.

Davis was driving northbound on Washington 167 about 1 a.m. on March 12 when a car pulled alongside him and more than 20 rounds from an AK-47 assault rifle were fired, police said. Two passengers in his vehicle were hospitalized for treatment of gunshot wounds. Police have recovered an AK-47 and a vehicle, which was burned.

Winds cut power on West Side

Seattle About 8,000 customers were still without electricity Sunday night in Kitsap and Thurston counties after storm winds raked Western Washington.

High winds knocked trees into power lines, cutting service to about 10,000 customers in Kitsap County about 3:30 a.m., said Tim Bader, a spokesman for Puget Sound Energy.

The same number of outages was reported in Thurston County Sunday afternoon, he said.

Utility crews restored some service but 4,000 households in Kitsap and 4,000 in Thurston remained without power Sunday night, he said. Crews planned to continue working overnight.

The storm brought winds of 20 to 30 mph Sunday morning and afternoon, said Art Gaebel, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. He said gusts of 50 to 60 mph were reported in Whatcom and Skagit counties.
