Flames throw another upset, burn DePaul

One upset simply wasn’t enough for Liberty.

Katie Feenstra had 29 points and 13 rebounds, and the Flames followed up their first NCAA Tournament victory by shocking DePaul 88-79 on Tuesday night in College Park, Md.

Liberty (26-6) weathered a 16-0 run in the second half to become only the second 13th seed to advance to the round of 16, duplicating Texas A&M’s feat in 1994.

The Flames, 0-8 in NCAA tournament play before beating fourth-seeded Penn State on Sunday, will face top-seeded LSU in the Chattanooga Regional semifinals.

Khara Smith scored 27 points, and Jenni Dant had 26 for fifth-seeded Blue Demons (26-5).

Also in the Chattanooga Regional:

(1) LSU 76, (9) Arizona 43: At Knoxville, Tenn., Temeka Johnson is making the most of her last chance for a national championship.

The Lady Tigers’ senior point guard scored all 14 of her points in the first half and had 10 assists to help LSU (31-2) rout the Wildcats (20-12).

(2) Duke 70, (7) Boston College 65: At Chapel Hill, N.C., with the rest of her teammates struggling, Alison Bales found her rhythm in time to send the Blue Devils (30-4) back to the round of 16 for the eighth year in a row.

The sophomore center scored 10 of her 16 points down the stretch, and Monique Currie led Duke with 21 points in the victory over the Eagles (20-10).

Philadelphia Regional

(2) Ohio St. 75, (7) Maryland 65: At College Park, Md., Ohio State’s balanced attack and aggressive defensive was more than enough to overcome Maryland’s home advantage in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Brandie Hoskins scored 22 points, three other Buckeyes reached double figures, and Ohio State (30-4) advanced to the round of 16 for the first time since 1993 with a victory over the Terrapins (22-10).

(3) Rutgers 61, (6) Temple 54: At Storrs, Conn., Temple’s incredible season came to a screeching halt in the second round of the tournament.

With senior Cappie Pondexter leading the way, the Scarlet Knights (27-6) ended the Owls’ (28-4) winning streak at 25 games with a victory at Gampel Pavilion.

Kansas City Regional

(3) Connecticut 70, (6) Florida St. 52: At Storrs, Conn., Connecticut’s depth and defense has carried the three-time defending national champions deep into March again.

Ann Strother scored 19 points, and Jessica Moore had 12 rebounds and three steals to lead the Huskies (25-7) to a victory over the Seminoles (24-8). UConn is in the sweet 16 for the 12th straight year.

Tempe Regional

(1) North Carolina 71, (9) George Washington 47: At Chapel Hill, N.C., North Carolina’s longest winning streak in eight seasons has carried the Tar Heels back into the round of 16.

Ivory Latta scored 17 points to lead North Carolina (29-3) past the Colonials (23-9) in the second round, helping the Tar Heels survive the opening week for the first time in three seasons.

Nikita Bell added 16 points, nine rebounds and six steals for the Tar Heels, who have won 15 straight games.
