Rogers earns first win over Gonzaga Prep

The Spokesman-Review

Before Monday’s GSL boys soccer match at Rogers High School, the Pirates had never defeated Gonzaga Prep in a league match.

It took 21 years and a shootout for Rogers to earn that first victory. After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Pirates scored four goals in the shootout to defeat the Bullpups 1-0.

Rogers goalkeeper Justin Erickson kept the Pirates in the match early, knocking several G-Prep shots over the crossbar on his way to 10 saves. Gonzaga Prep, which outshot Rogers 19-8, had some scoring opportunites in the second half. Morgan DeShazo led the attack for the Bullpups, but two of his shots from just outside the penalty box sailed wide of the goal.

The Pirates had a chance to win at the end of the second five-minute overtime period. Igor Pavlovic had a breakaway, but his shot hit the shoulder of Bullpups goalkeeper Jonathan Ehrenberg as time expired.

Ehrenberg finished with four saves, but he could’ve used a couple more in the shootout, which Rogers won 4-2. Admir Rasic and Pavlovic hit Rogers’ first two shootout goals, then Matt Bridges nailed the winner. Zhenya Nazarenko iced the victory for Rogers, which, according to head coach Chris Sande, is their first over Gonzaga Prep. Soccer became a GSL boys varsity sport in 1984.

In other matches, Lewis and Clark is starting a losing streak. After seeing their 37-game GSL winning streak disappear Wednesday against Central Valley, the Tigers fell 2-1 at University in a shootout to go to 0-2 in league. Stefan Andersson found the net for LC in the 30th minute, but U-Hi goalkeeper Clint Moquist, who had five first-half saves, played tremendous defense to keep the match close. In the second half, U-Hi moved Keith Realing from midfielder to forward, and it paid off with the game-tying goal in the 50th minute. Moquist came up big again for U-Hi during the shootout, making a key save to set up Bill McElroy‘s game-winner on U-Hi’s final attempt.

Central Valley dominated North Central 5-1 at home. Jay Vela, who scored the only goal of the LC match, had a hat trick against Indians. Jesse Dunbar led the Bears with three assists, setting up Vela, Josh Antles and Lucas Chesher for CV goals. … Ferris midfielder Eric Burke scored a hat trick, and Taylor Yonago added two goals to lead the Saxons past East Valley 5-3 at Ferris. After Dan Heinzen and Cole Abramson scored in the 68th and 69th minutes to cut the Knights’ deficit to 4-3, Ferris pushed the ensuing kickoff upfield and earned a corner kick. Burke put the corner into the net, his third goal of the match, in the 70th minute to ice it.

Shadle Park’s Andy Largent scored a hat trick in the first 50 minutes as the visiting Highlanders cruised to a 6-1 victory against Clarkston. Largent put a free kick from 28 yards into the far right corner of the net for his third goal and a 4-0 lead in the 50th minute. Trent Graham added two more goals in the next 10 minutes for Shadle. … Keith Kirsch scored both of Mt. Spokane’s goals to lead the Wildcats to a 2-1 home victory over Cheney. After Ben Parker tied the match for Cheney in the 10th minute, Kirsch received a pass from Adam VanNoy at the top of the penalty box, dribbled past three defenders and hit the winner in the 33rd minute. … Chris Windham controlled the midfield for Mead, scoring a goal and adding an assist in a 3-0 victory at West Valley. Pat Kanaly and Aaron Malmoe also scored for the Panthers.
