Barry Bonds had a third operation on his injured right knee, the latest setback in the slugger’s rehabilitation, he said on his Web site Wednesday.

Bonds underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday as doctors tried to clean out an infection, first draining fluids from his knee, according to a journal entry from Bonds posted on his Web site.

“The surgery went well. Dr. (Arthur) Ting cleaned out the infected area and they are now treating me with antibiotics,” Bonds wrote. “I know you have many questions regarding me playing baseball, but right now I have to spend the time focusing on getting healthy. I’ve been through ups and downs before and I will be back.”

The surgery was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. They reported Bonds would take antibiotics for at least two weeks and could not resume his rehab until doctors are assured the infection is gone.

Mets’ protest denied

Major League Baseball denied a protest by the New York Mets, who felt the grounds crew at RFK Stadium performed poorly during a rain-shortened loss to the Washington Nationals.

Mets manager Willie Randolph protested Saturday’s 5-3 loss based on Rule 4.16, which reads: “A game shall be forfeited to the visiting team if, after it has been suspended, the orders of the umpire to groundskeepers respecting preparation of the field for resumption of play are not complied with.”

Williams to undergo MRI

New York Yankees outfielder Bernie Williams is scheduled to have an MRI on his ailing right elbow when the team returns home on Friday.

“Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling told a Boston radio station his right ankle injury is a stress reaction, a precursor to a stress fracture, not a bone bruise.

“Baltimore bullpen coach Elrod Hendricks returned to the team, quite a bit lighter but with the same broad smile he wore before his stroke on April 14.

Hendricks lost 20 pounds while recovering from a mild stroke, which occurred immediately after Baltimore concluded a road trip with a game against Tampa Bay.
