Second-period burst fuels Flames alumni

The Spokesman-Review

In the past two editions of the Alumni Cup between the Calgary Flames Alumni and the Spokane Grinders, the National Hockey League team put away its local competition with late third-period scoring bursts.

In Saturday night’s 10-5 victory over Spokane’s top hockey amateur team, Calgary decided the game by outscoring the home team 3-1 in the second period. After leading 3-2 through one period, Calgary broke open the game by netting the first three goals of the second period.

The game, played at Eagles Ice-A-Rena, featured NHL Hall of Fame player Lanny McDonald. McDonald opened the scoring for Calgary, but it was Craig Levie who scored the hat trick to lead Calgary to its third straight victory in the game which raised funds for the Mark Rypien Foundation. Dana Murzyn had a goal and three assists for the former Flames.

For Spokane, Mike Pankey scored twice and added an assist, and Danny Holden had a goal and two assists.
