Golden Bears capture Pacific-10 crowns

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The California Golden Bears won both the men’s and women’s team titles at the Pacific-10 Conference Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma on Sunday.

The Cal men edged the Washington Huskies 69-66. Oregon State and Stanford tied for third with 42 points. Washington State (26) was fifth.

The Cal women beat runner-up Washington 67-56. Southern Cal (53) was third. WSU (38) finished sixth.

Cal’s second-ranked varsity 8 men’s team ended the fourth-ranked Huskies two-year reign. The Bears finished the 2,000-meter race in 5 minutes, 39.4 seconds. Washington clocked a 5:42.4. Fifth-ranked Stanford (5:45.0) was third.

Washington (5:46.5) beat Cal (5:47.8) to win the men’s junior varsity 8 and the Huskies (6:26.6) also edged Cal (6:27.5) to win the men’s varsity 4.

Cal (5:51.7) and the Huskies (6:00.3) finished 1-2 in the men’s freshman 8.

The Cal women clocked a 6:20.6 to beat runner-up Stanford by 5.5 seconds in the varsity 8 Grand Final. The Bears also won the junior varsity 8.

Washington’s women won the novice 8 with a time of 6:38.0, 4.2 seconds ahead of runner-up Cal.

Southern Cal (7:12.9) and Washington (7:17.0) finished 1-2 in the women’s varsity 4.

The Cougars men, who compete as a club team, won the varsity 8 petite final with a time of 6:08.9, nearly six seconds ahead of USC.

Gonzaga’s women finished second in the varsity 8 petite final with a time of 6:48.7. Oregon State won the race.
