around the horn
Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle will leave the club today to be with his ill 2-year-old daughter, who was hospitalized Friday in Denver following a series of seizures.
Hurdle’s daughter, Madison Reilly, has Prader-Willi Syndrome, a genetic disorder. Since his daughter’s birth in 2002, Hurdle has been active in raising funds to help raise awareness of the disease.
Bench coach Jamie Quirk, a former Spokane Indians player, will manage the club tonight. Quirk is attending his daughter’s graduation Sunday, so hitting coach Duane Espy and pitching coach Bob Apodaca will run the club that day.
Reds designate Jimenez for assignment to minors
Cincinnati designated second baseman D’Angelo Jimenez for assignment, the latest move to shake up the struggling team.
Jimenez agreed to a one-year, $2.87 million contract in the off-season, but lost his starting job by hitting .229 with five RBIs in 35 games. He made two of the Reds’ four errors in Cincinnati’s last game, a 10-6 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday.
The Reds, who take a 15-26 record into tonight’s home game against Cleveland, recalled former Spokane Indians infielder Luis Lopez from Triple-A Louisville to take Jimenez’s place on the roster.
“The Oakland Athletics placed closer Octavio Dotel on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow.
“Los Angeles Angels right fielder Vladimir Guerrero left the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after jamming his left shoulder on a play at the plate.
“Colorado reliever Chin-hui Tsao will have arthroscopic surgery next week on his right shoulder.
The surgery will be Wednesday in Denver, the team said. No date was set for Tsao’s return to the team.
The right-hander is 1-0 with three saves and a 6.55 ERA in 10 games this season.
Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said Tsao’s torn labrum will be repaired, with an exploratory procedure also scheduled to determine if there is any rotator cuff damage.
