GU’s Campbell makes 1st team

Gonzaga University sophomore second baseman Scott Campbell was named to the All-West Coast Conference first team for baseball, the conference announced Wednesday.

Campbell, a transfer from Auckland, New Zealand, led the Bulldogs in hitting (.332) and tied for the team lead with 70 hits. He had 10 doubles and 30 RBIs.

Freshman third baseman Darin Holcomb (Shadle Park High), junior catcher Kiel Thibault and junior first baseman Bobby Carlson of the Bulldogs were selected to the second team.

Holcomb hit .313 with 70 hits, 15 doubles and 31 RBIs.

Thibault finished with 68 hits, 11 doubles and 35 RBIs while hitting .312.

Carlson led the WCC with 57 RBIs, the seventh-best season total in GU history. He added eight home runs and a team-best 17 doubles.

Junior pitchers Patrick Donovan (North Central High) and Josh Monroe made honorable mention for the Zags, who finished second behind Loyola Marymount in the Coast Division.

Donovan, a left-hander, went 6-7 with a 3.22 ERA and 62 strikeouts. Righty Monroe was 9-4 with an ERA of 3.03 and 66 strikeouts.

Pepperdine swept the individual honors as Chad Tracy was named player of the year, Paul Coleman pitcher of the year and Barry Enright freshman of the year.

San Francisco’s Nino Giarratano was chosen coach of the year.
