INDY RACING LEAGUE

Indianapolis 500

Schedule: Sunday, race (9 a.m., ABC).

Track: Indianapolis Motor Speedway (rectangular oval, 2.5 miles, 9 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 500 miles, 200 laps.

Last race: England’s Dan Wheldon became the first IndyCar Series driver to win three of the first four races of a season on April 30. Wheldon successfully defended his Indy Japan 300 title after leader Tomas Scheckter ran out of fuel with two laps to go. Wheldon easily held off Scott Sharp by 3.4612 seconds on the Honda-built 1.5-mile Twin Ring Motegi oval.

Last year: Buddy Rice recorded his first career victory at the rain-shortened Indianapolis 500 and became the first American to win the event since Eddie Cheever in 1998. Rice took the lead at lap 172 and was still in front when another storm ended the race eight laps later.

Fast facts: The race has taken place every year since 1911, except for when the United States was in World War I (1917-18) and World War II (1942-45). … Tony Kanaan won the pole on May 22 with a speed of 227.566 mph. … Danica Patrick became the fourth female to qualify for this race after recording the fourth-highest speed of 227.004 mph. … A.J. Foyt IV, 21, is the youngest driver this year. His grandfather, team owner A.J. Foyt Jr., shares the race record of four wins with Al Unser and Rick Mears.

Next race: Bombardier 500, June 11, Fort Worth, Texas.

NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Coca-Cola 600

Site: Concord, N.C.

Schedule: Thursday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 4 p.m.); Sunday, race (FOX, 2 p.m.).

Track: Lowe’s Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 600 miles, 400 laps.

Last race: Mark Martin took advantage of Elliott Sadler’s struggles off a restart with 19 laps left and won his second All-Star Challenge and $1 million at Concord.

Last year: Jimmie Johnson came from fifth place to take over the lead with 16 laps remaining and held on to win the Coca-Cola 600 for the second straight year. Rick Hendrick, Johnson’s team owner, also won the Busch Series event the previous day with driver Kyle Busch.

Fast facts: Five drivers have won the All-Star Challenge and Coca-Cola 600 in consecutive weeks, most recently Johnson in 2003. … Jeff Gordon’s first victory in the series was the 1994 Coca-Cola 600 while Matt Kenseth picked up his in the 2000 event. … The closest finish in this race came in 1988, when Darrell Waltrip edged Rusty Wallace by .24 seconds.

Next race: MBNA America 400, June 5, Dover, Del.

NASCAR BUSCH

Carquest Auto Parts 300

Site: Concord, N.C.

Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 2 p.m.); Saturday, race (FX, 4 p.m.).

Track: Lowe’s Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps.

Last race: Carl Edwards passed Elliott Sadler with one lap to go after a green-white-checker restart in overtime and won the Funai 250 in Richmond, Va. The victory was the second for Edwards in just 14 career starts in the Busch Series, and deprived Sadler a victory in his home state.

Last year: Kyle Busch overtook Joe Nemechek, who lost control with 18 laps remaining, and had just enough gas to win the Carquest Auto Parts 300 under caution for his second victory in three races.

Fast facts: Rookie Reed Sorenson hasn’t finished better than 31st in three of his last four races. … Kenny Wallace and Tim Fedewa are both expected to make their 325th career Busch starts this weekend, but neither has won or finished among the top five at Concord. … No polesitter has won this race since Jeff Gordon in 1992.

Fast facts: F1’s new qualifying format will debut this weekend. The second session was eliminated and the running order of the first will be based on the finish in the previous race, with the winner going last. … Ralf Schumacher ended a 24-race winless streak during the 2003 event. … Nuerburgring has held the European Grand Prix since 1984. The city previously had its license to hold Formula One events revoked after Niki Lauda was badly burned during an accident in 1976. … The original Nuerburgring, the Nordschleife, ran for 14 miles and was, in fact, two circuits: the Nordschleife and the Sudschleife.
