Sunset Gallery opens in Harrison

Just in time for the official kickoff of summer, a new art gallery is opening its doors in Harrison, Idaho.

The Sunset Gallery will feature nontraditional art and design from a wide selection of local and regional artists, says artist Carol Muzik, owner of the gallery with her husband, Nick.

“With bold color, humor and quality artistry,” says Muzik, “the works represent a variety of creative expression.”

The gallery is carrying works by Kristen Bisaillon, Donna Collison, Andrea Evarts, Sue Farmer, Jo Fyfe, Rhea Giffin, I-90 Sisters, Lavender Lime, Colleen Clark-Loomer, Kathleen Loomey, Mari Meehan, Vic Moore, Mulberry Silk Art, Christine Owens, Janice Puente, Marcella Rose, Jo Simpson, Louise Telford, Gay Waldman and Frank Werner.

An opening reception is Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. in the gallery, 200 S. Coeur d’Alene Ave. (above the One Shot Charlie’s Bar and Restaurant) in Harrison.

Kilian-Tan at Tinman Gallery

“Contemplations,” the latest oil paintings of German-born artist Ilse Kilian-Tan, go on view beginning Friday at the Tinman Gallery.

Kilan-Tan, also known for her large-scale weavings, has artwork in public and private collections in Spokane, Seattle, Vancouver, Wash., and Leipzig, Germany.

An opening artist’s reception is Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. with live music by Sidhe.

Art in the garden

The fifth annual one-day “Art, Garden Art and Plant Sale” takes place Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the garden of artist Kay O’Rourke, 3123 W. Ninth Ave.

A versatile lineup of artists will show and sell their unique designs including O’Rourke, who is showing wood sculptures, paintings and drawings.

In addition, there will be paintings and prints by De De McKay, watercolor and oil paintings by Olga Forve, air-brushed furniture by Pam Galloway, jewelry and glass by Fiona Black, and blown-glass beads and pendants by Heath Anspach.

Look for birds and “things from nature” by Karen Mobley, whimsical vessels and drawings by Gina Freuen, welded metal sculptures by Ruben Trejo and papier mache’ and window art by Linda Dixon.

Rounding out the offerings will be garden sculpture and furniture by William Simmons and Karma Lloyd, novelties and found mixed-media creations by Louise and Chemyn Kodis, and metal objects by Jim Shrock of Earth Works Recycling.

Also available will be perennials, annuals, herbs and vegetable plantings grown by the Gardeners of Spokane. All the money raised from selling plants “goes back into the community,” says O’Rourke. The garden group donates plants and performs beautification projects for such nonprofit organizations as the Union Gospel Mission.

CREATE Place giggles

“Giggling Goliards,” an exhibit of highly creative papier mache designs, closes at The CREATE Place in Newport on Saturday with an artists’ reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

This is a last chance to view the wild and wacky sculptural forms from Sherri Ballman of Deer Park, Rhea Giffin of Coeur d’Alene and Leata Judd of Bayview, Idaho.

The art center, 900 W. Fourth St. in Newport, is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Carolyn’s on 5th Avenue

Mixed-media art by Charleen Martin of Coeur d’Alene dominates the Carolyn’s on 5th Avenue gallery in Metaline Falls, Wash.

The gallery, 222 E. 5h Ave., is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Martin’s show goes through June 30.

According to gallery owner Carolyn Myers, there also are works by Northwest artists working in glass, pottery, jewelry and metal.

North County Artist Trails

The open artists’ studio tour organized by the Colville Arts Foundation premieres this weekend and continues throughout the summer.

“North Country Artist Trails” features a variety of artists including potters, sculptors, metal workers, painters and bead workers.

Although participating artists and crafters have different hours, all will open their studios Friday through Monday, July 29 to 31 and Aug. 26 to 28.

Priest Lake’s Entrée Gallery

The Entree Gallery is having an artist demonstration by Rick Kom on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. On Sunday there will be a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. for Spokane contemporary impressionist painter Tom Wakeley.

The Pend Oreille Arts Council coordinates exhibitions in several public spaces in the Sandpoint/Sagle area. The following displays are up through June 10. For details call POAC executive director Lizzy Hughes at (208) 263-6139.

• The drawings of Sandpoint artist Douglas Fluckiger reflect his fascination with the natural beauty of the Inland Northwest. View a recent series of graphite drawings in the Sandpoint Mayor’s Office in City Hall, 1123 Lake St. Hours are 9 a.m to 5 p.m., weekdays.

• Watercolor paintings by Jean Mace of Bonners Ferry are on display at the County Commissioner’s Office in the Courthouse Building, 215 S. First St., Sandpoint. Lose yourself in Mace’s landscapes weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• See more of Mace’s renderings at Swan’s, 41 Lakeshore Dr. in Sagle. She is showing with oil painter Doug Roe, whose work includes wildlife paintings from his excursions into the northern Idaho wilderness.

• Western Montana artist Barbara Mullins is showing wildlife paintings in at the University of Idaho Bonner County Extension Office, 4205 N. Boyer St., Sandpoint. The office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.

• The “Finely Crafted” exhibit in the POAC Gallery features jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, masks, baskets and mirrors. There are works by Mark Edmundson, Daris Judd, Susan Dalby, Barry Barush, Lynn Walters, Peter Mulbarger, Jo Roseborough, Lynn Piper and Daryl Baird. The gallery is open daily in the Power House Building, 120 Lake St., Sandpoint.

• Northern Lights headquarters, 321 Chevy St. in Sagle, is highlighting the innovative papier mache sculptures of Leata Judd from Bayview and the dance-influenced multimedia sculptures of Cyndi E. Morgan from Sagle. Stop by weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Dorothy Smith of Bonners Ferry is displaying her oil paintings at the US Bank, 201 Main St. in Sandpoint. She is showing a variety of canvases including still lifes, florals and outdoor scenes. The work can be viewed from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. to 6 on Friday.
