EWU can’t keep Cal’s pace
Brittney Osborn was the lone Eastern Washington player in double figures, with 12 points, as the Eagles suffered a 64-45 loss to California in the first round of the Preseason WNIT at the Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.
California jumped to a 26-16 lead in the first half and scored 38 second-half points behind 64 percent shooting from the field to finish Eastern Washington. The Eagles closed within 12 points at 51-39 with 4:41 to go after Cal committed three straight turnovers, but the Bears extended the lead to a comfortable 19 on four free throws and a three-pointer. EWU didn’t get any closer than 17 the rest of the game.
•Four players scored in double figures, with Sarah Schramm’s 12 leading the way, in Gonzaga University’s 89-36 exhibition win over Concordia (Calif.) College at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
Schramm hit 4 of 5 from the floor including 2 for 2 from 3-point range.
Freshman Maria Hassett also hit double digits with 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the floor. Starters Anne Bailey and Stephanie Hawk chipped in with 11 points, with Bailey posting a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Men’s basketball
The University of Idaho shot 62 percent from the field in the second half to overcome a 34-33 halftime deficit and pull out a 73-63 exhibition win over Carroll College at Memorial Gym in Moscow on Wednesday night.
Tanoris Shepard scored 16 points to lead four Vandals players in double figures.
Volleyball
Lizzy Mellor had 16 kills and 19 defensive digs in Eastern Washington’s 3-1 win over Boise State at Bronco Gym in Boise.
Kerri Beck had a team-high 18 kills for the Eagles and Verdoljak, along with Mellor, co-led in digs with 19.
•Daidre Mendenhall and Melissa Merchant had 12 kills apiece to lead North Idaho College to a 3-1 win over Community Colleges of Spokane in a non-conference match at Coeur d’Alene.
Women’s soccer
Alexis DeLeo and Akosua Fordjour both scored twice to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to a 6-0 win over Everett Community College in the first round of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Collges playoffs at Spokane Falls.
The Sasquatch advance to the second round and will play Highline CC (11-2-3) in Burien on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Men’s soccer
Nick DeGraffenreid’s goal in the waning minutes of regulation gave the Community Colleges of Spokane a 3-2 win at Shoreline CC in the first round of NWAACC playoff action.
The Sasquatch (10-10-4) also received goals from Bryan Bourland and Keith Kirsch, who also had an assist.
CC Spokane plays at Southwest Oregon in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
