OT win keeps title shot alive for GU men’s soccer
Grant Lundberg scored during the seventh minute of overtime Thursday as host Gonzaga kept alive its West Coast Conference men’s soccer title hopes with a 2-1 win over 11th-ranked, conference-leading Santa Clara.
Lundberg took a pass from Mark Stock and scored from 6 yards out as the Bulldogs (7-8-4, 5-4-2) avenged a 1-0 loss to the Broncos (12-5-2, 6-3-2) from mid-October.
Santa Clara nearly won the match in regulation, but Mehdi Ballouchy’s 25-yard shot into the far right corner of the net as time expired was waved off by the middle referee.
The Bulldogs can claim the title during Saturday’s regular-season finales if they defeat San Francisco, Loyola Marymount tops San Diego, and the Broncos lose to Portland. Many other scenarios are possible.
