Huskies sweep aside Cougars
The No. 3 Washington Huskies volleyball team (26-1, 17-1) capped its second straight Pacific-10 Conference title with a 30-15, 30-12, 30-22 win over Washington State (9-22, 2-16) Friday night at the Bank of America Arena in Seattle.
Washington’s All-American Sanja Tomasevic led all players with 19 kills, hitting .545, with a pair of aces and 11 digs. Brie Hagerty tallied 16 kills for the Huskies and teammate Christal Morrison added another 12 kills and 10 digs.
Natalia Owens led the Cougars with 10 kills while Jen Barcus had three blocks and Jalen Pendon had 14 digs. Maureen Perez had 27 assists.
The Cougars, the Pac-10 blocking leader on the season, had five team blocks, the lowest total of their 31 matches this season.
Barcus ends the season in fifth place on the WSU career block assist list with a total of 336, and seventh in career total blocks with 379.
Hockey
Leif Sherman scored twice and Greg Gallagher and David Manzo scored one goal apiece, but it wasn’t enough as the Spokane Braves fell to the Creston Thunder Cats 5-4 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action at Planet Ice.
•Despite 55 saves by Zach Lelwica, the Spokane Flyers fell to the host Ft. Vancouver Pioneers 5-4 in overtime in a Northern Pacific Hockey League contest.
