Performance will benefit muscular dystrophy group

Get in the holiday spirit by catching the Dec. 14 performance of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at the Spokane Civic Theatre and benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Along with the show, the Holidays and Hope fund-raiser includes a social hour included with hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting and coffee as well as a silent auction.

Tickets are $30.

Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency and nonprofit group devoted to conquering the neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. The group is composed of scientists and concerned citizens who work together to provide medical examinations, flu shots, support groups, summer camps for children, and assistance with the purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces.

Benefit holiday bazaar

The Georgian Room at the Spokane Club is the setting for the first Spokane County Domestic Violence Consortium Holiday Bazaar.

An assortment of items from local artisans, including handcrafted jewelry, purses, gift baskets and gourmet foods, will be up for bid next Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participating vendors will donate a portion of their proceeds to the SCDVC. Vendors are Beth’s Baby Things, La Colombe Coffee, Austin’s Jewelers, Sondahl Pottery, Terene Creations, Chocolat and The Body Shop.

The SCDVC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of intimate partner violence, or domestic violence, in Spokane County. To reach its goal the group has a variety of programs, which include the Children’s Waiting Room, a free drop-in child care facility in the Spokane County Courthouse for parents or guardians attending to court business; an employer outreach program titled Intimate Partner Violence: It’s a Workplace Issue!, which provides training and education for supervisors and employees on intimate partner violence, stalking and harassment; and the Healthy Relationships Outreach program to teach relationship skills, warning signs and preventive safety planning to elementary school children.

Holiday cards and gifts for UNICEF

The Eastern Washington University Model United Nations will host a UNICEF cards and gift sale Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The sale will be in the Pence Union Building on the EWU campus in Cheney.

A large portion of the proceeds will benefit UNICEF to improve the quality of children’s lives throughout the world, and a small portion of the proceeds will be used to send 14 delegates of EWU-MUN to the Model United Nations Conference in Canada in January.

Art benefit

Participate in the Spokane Art School’s 26th annual fund-raiser, Yuletide 2005, through Dec. 23.

Works by more than 40 local artists are available for purchase, with proceeds supporting educational and exhibition programs offered by the school throughout 2006.

Show hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Holiday events at St. Vincent de Paul

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is offering a variety of ways to give back to the community this holiday season.

• Azteca Restaurants will donate a portion of its proceeds Wednesday to support the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.

To participate, dine at one of three area restaurants: 9738 Newport Highway, 245 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. or 14700 E. Indiana Ave.

• The first antiques sale held at the St. Vincent de Paul Store at 2824 N. Monroe St. will begin Friday and continue through next Sunday.

Items include antiques gathered over the past 40 years, some of which are more than 100 years old.

• Dine to Donate will take place at all Spokane-area Applebee’s Restaurants Dec. 6.

Applebee’s will donate 10 percent of its proceeds to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.

• Donate new and used jewelry to the Help Us Help Others jewelry drive through Jan. 31.

Items may be taken to any local St. Vincent de Paul store, or the Jewelry Design Center, 821 N. Division St.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is inspired by gospel values and is a Roman Catholic lay organization. The nonprofit group offers a variety of services to the poor and unfortunate and has been recognized as the largest food bank in the state.

The group serves more than 8,000 a month.

Food drive

Walt’s Mailing Service, 9610 E. First Ave., will host a food drive for the Spokane Valley Food Bank.

Nonperishable food items may be dropped off Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Breakfast with Santa

The Spokane Valley Rotary Club will host its annual breakfast with Santa on Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Activities will be at Central Valley High School, 821 S. Sullivan Road, and will encompass a beanbag toss, fish pond prizes, face painting, a balloon clown and crafts by the Spokane Valley Rotary.

Appearances will be made by a variety of mascots, including the Spokane Chiefs’ hockey mascot, Boomer, and, of course, Santa Claus.

Proceeds will benefit various Rotary service projects, college scholarships, maintenance of the Centennial Trail, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and the Mirabeau Community Center.

Craft fair for education

Be supportive of learning by shopping at the Chattaroy Elementary School Craft Fair.

The free fair, hosted by the Chattaroy Parent Teacher Organization, will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the school, 25717 N. Yale Road.

A variety of items will be available for purchase, including jewelry, crochet rugs, painted wood items, Christmas items, Tupperware, Mary Kay products, candles, baby gifts, fabric crafts, books, goat soap and needlework.

The money raised from booth rentals will be used by the school to purchase Love and Logic books and CDs and support an educational appearance by a local Native American woman who will share stories, clothing and artifacts from her people.

In addition to shopping, catch a demonstration on the pottery wheel, or watch children give it try.

Food booth and a bake sale booth will be open during the event. Proceeds from the bake sale booth will benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.
