Speaker series – The North Central High School chapter of the National Honor Society hosts local author Chris Crutcher, 7 p.m. Tuesday at the school, 1600 N. Howard; 354-7387.

Celebration of Lights – The City of Spokane Valley hosts its third annual Christmas tree lighting, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday in the University City Mall parking lot. The event includes a performance by the Solar Energy children’s choir and a visit from Santa; 921-1000.

Program Evaluation – Gonzaga University continues its nonprofit leadership board development series, 7 a.m. Thursday at the Schoenberg Center, Room 202, 500 E. Boone. Registration is required. The cost is $45; 323-3573.

Holiday sale – The Lilac Blind Foundation hosts its seventh annual fund-raiser, 7 a.m.- 1 p.m. Friday, The Red Lion Hotel at the Park, 303 W. North River Drive; 328-9116.

Candlelight Christmas concert – The Gonzaga University Choir and Spokane Symphony Brass Quintet will perform at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Boone and Astor. Tickets are $12 general, $10 seniors and students in advance through TicketsWest, $15 at the door; 325-SEAT.

Spaghetti night – Pasta buffet hosted by the South Hill Kiwanis from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the South Hill Senior Center, 3151 E. 27th. Proceeds will benefit community projects. Tickets: adults $8; kids under 6 free; 326-1216.

Compass Club luncheon – The women’s club for welcoming newcomers to the area will host a holiday music program, 11 a.m. Sunday at the Spokane Club, 1002 W. Riverside. Lunch is $19. Reservations are required; 465-8163.

Family book night – Each child will get a free book. There will also be an activity guide for parents, arts and crafts projects and treats, 4-5 p.m. next Monday at the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook. Engineers Forum of Spokane – Beth Hodgson of Spring Environmental will speak on “Incorporating Environmental Engineering into Engineering Projects,” noon next Monday at the Holiday Inn Airport, 1616 Windsor Drive. Lunch is $12; 244-3467.

Carols at Christmas – A community Christmas concert, 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at Hazen and Jaeger Valley, 1306 N. Pines. Refreshments will be served; 924-9700.

DNA Lifeprint Kit – The free child identification program will provide parents with digital pictures and video CD of their child, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 10 at 2807 S. Stone, Suite 201; 838-6261.

Human rights – Raymond Reyes, associate vice president for diversity at Gonzaga University, will speak on “Building a Multicultural Democracy,” 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive; 624-3608.

AmeriCorps – This group is offering on-the-job training in the housing construction industry to those ages 18-25. The group is also looking for tutors for at-risk high school students and a volunteer coordinator/trainer, 18 years or older, to provide activities for AmeriCorp members; 456-7660.
