Greek food, dancing, arts aplenty at annual festival

If you’ve been salivating for souvlaki or craving some kapama, the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., is here to fill your bellys with food and your minds with Greek culture.

For the 70th year, the church is offering its Greek Festival today, Friday and Saturday.

Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 8 p.m., and the festival will open at noon Saturday.

Items on the menu include beef kapama, a dish braised in tomato sauce, orzo pasta with browned butter and myzithra cheese, pastries and Greek coffee and pastries. Beer and wine will be available in the taverna.

The celebrations will be under way with traditional Greek dancing, cooking demonstrations and icon painting demonstrations.

The cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children 6 and under. The price includes a complete dinner or three grill items, and meals are available to eat at the festival or to take home.

Tickets are available at City Ramp Garage, First and Stevens; G. Arger Co., 300 N. Mullan Road, Spokane Valley; Spartan Cutlery in NorthTown Mall; and at the church.

Christian comedy

The People for Christ Ministry is presenting Christian comedian Chonda Pierce at the Spokane Opera House on Monday at 7 p.m.

Pierce has been entertaining audiences for more than 20 years, is the author of eight books, has traveled with the Rev. Billy Graham and has performed at the Grand Ole Opry.

Tickets are $17.50 in advance, $20 at the door or $22.50 for gold seats and are available at all TicketsWest outlets, by phone at 325-SEAT, online at www.ticketswest.com or at local Christian bookstores.

Choral concert

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., is presenting a Choral Evensong concert Sunday at 4 p.m.

Evensong is a traditional, centuries-old service for reflection and to pray for protection through the night.

The Ladies of the Cathedral Choir will sing “sung Scriptures,” and contemporary pieces with organ accompaniment by Billie Severtsen and Janet Satre Ahrend.

Before the concert, the church will be open for tours from noon to 4 p.m.

The events are free, and a free-will offering will be taken.

Guest speaker

Plymouth Congregational Church, 1502 W. Eighth Ave., is hosting Ronald White, a professor at San Francisco Theological Seminary during the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday, and at 7 that evening.

White is the author of the book “The Eloquent President: A Portrait of Lincoln Through His Words” and has spoken about Lincoln at the White House, the Library of Congress and at Gettysburg.

Domestic violence seminars

According to the Spokane County Domestic Violence Consortium, one of every three women in Spokane County has been a victim of domestic violence.

In conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Interfaith Council is presenting a series of faith-based events in many different churches throughout Spokane.
