Construction will begin this winter on Coeur d’Alene’s 18-story Parkside condominium project on Front Avenue between Sixth and Seventh streets. Building permits have been granted and the red tape cut for some time.

The problem was moving the Social Security offices from the southwest corner of the block. That will now happen, as Parkside developers have purchased the former Verizon building at Seventh and Wallace, and Social Security will move its 20 employees there this winter.

“The minute they’re gone, the building’s gone!” exclaimed Monte Miller of Miller Stauffer Architects, Parkside’s designers and principal owners.

The building will be removed to make way for Parkside on the south half of the block. Social Security will occupy the main floor of the old Verizon building, and Verizon will lease the basement to house telephone switch gear.

Miller Stauffer also owns the former Icy Sweets and Breakfast Nook properties in the northwest and north central portions of the block, but these will not be part of the condo project. The Icy Sweets building and lot (once a service station) will be the staging area for Goebel Construction. The Breakfast Nook eventually will move to the former A&W building on Fourth Street.

All 53 condos in Parkside have been sold, with a waiting list, Miller said. Prices start at $400,000, and about half the buyers are from out of town.

The units are two to three bedrooms from 1,900 to 2,400 square feet, and the penthouses range from 3,000 to 4,000 square feet. Views are of McEuen Park, Tubbs Hill and Lake Coeur d’Alene. The below-ground levels are for parking, and the ground level is for businesses with spaces from 800 to 3,000 square feet, Miller said.

Miller Stauffer offices will be on level two, and the 12,000-square-foot third level is available. Nighthawk Radiology will have the fourth and fifth levels.

The building should open in late summer 2007, Miller said. For information, phone 664-1773.

Movie Central to celebrate

The grand opening for the Movie Central store in Rathdrum will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The 1,000-square-foot movie and games rental business is located at 15626 N. Highway 41, next to Domino’s Pizza and across from Lakeland Junior High School.

“We’re simply an easy-going hometown business,” said Mike Kaney, who owns the store with his wife, Judy. Employee Ashley Crawford helps them run the business, which is open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Kaneys came to North Idaho in April from Riverside, Calif., where he was a truck driver and she was a loan officer. Phone Movie Central at 687-4141.

Name change

The Modern Glass store at 311 Coeur d’Alene Ave. in downtown Coeur d’Alene has changed its name to Lake City Glass. Owner Raymond Jensen has nine employees in the 13,000-square-foot building, who primarily do retail, commercial and auto glass work. Meanwhile, Jensen’s relatives Dennis Jensen, Kathy Millard and Kevin Culpepper retain Modern Glass in the Industrial Park.

They and 21 employees do large-scale residential and commercial work in their 30,000-square-foot building. The family-owned business started in Coeur d’Alene in 1946.
