Passing game may take big hit

Associated Press

Starting wide receivers Bobby Engram and Darrell Jackson are both listed as doubtful for the Seattle Seahawks’ game Sunday at St. Louis.

Engram cracked two ribs on the first play in last Sunday’s 20-17 overtime loss to Washington. He still caught nine passes for 106 yards before sitting out the fourth quarter and extra period.

Jackson has a bone bruise in his right knee that flared up late last week. He played against the Redskins, and had seven catches for 55 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown reception with 1 minute, 23 seconds left that tied the score at 17.

“We have pretty good depth there,” Seattle coach Mike Holmgren said. “You take out Engram and Jackson … that’s a big hunk.”

Jackson arrived at team headquarters on Monday with increased swelling in his knee. He will be limited in practice this week. Holmgren said he believes Jackson jammed the knee sometime during Seattle’s first three games.

Jackson is third in the NFL with 29 receptions and Engram is tied for fourth with 27. If neither can play, veterans Joe Jurevicius and Peter Warrick will most likely start. Second-year receiver D.J. Hackett is also working with the first unit.

Jurevicius signed as a free agent in the off-season, and has been Seattle’s No. 3 receiver. He has seven catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

Rouen signs, Araguz released

The Seahawks signed veteran punter Tom Rouen and released Leo Araguz.

Rouen was cut by Carolina at the end of training camp, but came to Seattle for a tryout on Tuesday.

Rouen played in four games for Seattle last year, averaging 42 yards per kick, but suffered a hamstring injury in the fourth game against St. Louis and was later placed on injured reserve. Rouen played two years with Seattle, and spending most of his career with Denver.

Araguz beat out Chris Kluwe for the job in training camp. After averaging 46 yards per kick in the opener against Jacksonville, his numbers have dropped.
