CdA mayor has campaign cash, but hasn’t spent any

By Erica Curless and Rasha Madkour The Spokesman-Review

Coeur d’Alene Mayor Sandi Bloem hasn’t spent any cash on her re-election campaign but has raised $2,100.

Bloem’s campaign finance report shows a total of 17 donations, all from Kootenai County residents.

Challenger Joseph Kunka also hasn’t spent any money in preparation for the Nov. 8 election. So far he’s received one $50 donation. That’s exactly what he said he expected – a low-key campaign without many donations.

City candidates recently turned in campaign finance reports that show how much money had been received and spent through Oct. 10.

The largest donor to Bloem’s campaign is downtown businessman Ed Muehlback, who gave $250. Jim Elder, a businessman and member of the city’s urban renewal agency, contributed $200 while attorney Scott Reed and Paul Anderson of Avista each gave $100.

Councilwoman Deanna Goodlander who is running against former planning commissioner Susie Snedaker collected $3,030 in donations and spent $1,120. Snedaker hasn’t raised any money, saying her campaign is grass-roots.

Goodlander said she’s asking for contributions so she’s able to get out her name.

“You’ve got to tell people you want the job,” Goodlander said.

Her largest contribution—$300— comes from Ruth Pratt of the Coeur d’Alene Library Foundation. Elder and Tom Addis Dodge Inc. each gave $200 while Realtor John Butler gave $100, as did Contractors Northwest and G.D. Longwell Architects.

Neither Councilman Woody McEvers nor his challenger, Steven Foxx, has any money in their war chests.

In Post Falls, former Councilwoman Jackie McAvoy has $1,300 – more than her two challengers, although most of it is from a $1,100 personal loan. The rest came from two $100 donations from Erma Stoddard and local Realtor Monte Risvold.

McAvoy is in a three-way race against incumbent Councilman Joe Bodman and former Councilman Joe Doellefeld.

Doellefeld has loaned himself $698, all of which he has spent on signs and postage.

Bodman raised $700, of which $200 came from Templin and Associates. The rest was from unitemized contributions of $50 or less.

Post Falls Mayor Clay Larkin, who is running unopposed, received two $250 contributions from Gillman Partnership and Coeur d’Alene Racing.

Councilman Ron Johnson, who also is unchallenged, received a $100 donation from Risvold. Johnson returned the contribution.
