An armed man suspected of shooting his stepfather to death remained at large Friday night despite an intensive search by Coeur d’Alene police and Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies.

At nightfall, authorities suspended their search of Tubbs Hill for safety reasons and urged the public to stay away from the popular recreation spot.

Bryan Lee Doss, 29, is suspected of fatally shooting his stepfather, Coeur d’Alene resident Tim Grosch, about 1 p.m. Friday.

Grosch, 55, was shot at his home near 14th Street and Bancroft, police spokeswoman Sgt. Christie Wood said. He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where he died.

Doss was last seen running to Tubbs Hill, east of downtown Coeur d’Alene, Wood said.

Using helicopters, search dogs and officers on foot, police scoured Tubbs Hill on Friday afternoon and evening looking for Doss.

“We still haven’t located this guy,” Wood said.

“We used every resource we could get our hands on.”

Doss is tall, thin, has tattoos on each arm and wears glasses, Wood said. When last seen, he was wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt and was carrying a black backpack.

Because Doss was thought to be armed with a semiautomatic pistol, officers suspended the search Friday night as darkness fell, Wood said.

They will resume the search today.
