Sur Sangam concert planned at SFCC

The Spokesman-Review

Sur Sangam, a concert of ragas performed on wind and string instruments from India, will be presented by the South Asia Cultural Association on Friday at Spokane Falls Community College.

Featured performers will be “Surmani” V.K. Raman on bamboo flute and Nand Kishore Muley on santur, a dulcimerlike stringed instrument, along with percussionists B. Ravi Shankar and Aditya Kalyanpur.

Raman, a noted composer as well as performer, studied with A.V. Prakash starting at age 9 and has frequently performed with his guru, Dr. N. Ramani.

Muley, a German Grammy winner, has modified his instrument to create a tonal range extending over three octaves; the 100 strings play 34 notes.

Friday’s concert begins at 7 p.m. in SFCC’s Music Building Auditorium (Building 15). Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for students with ID (free for Community Colleges of Spokane students, $10 for CCS faculty/staff), at the door.

The performers also will give a free workshop on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. in the same location. For more information, call 467-5558.
