Berths settled for next week’s soccer, volleyball tournaments

Final state berths were decided in boys and girls soccer and volleyball play-in matches Saturday.

Here’s a look at the fields for the state soccer tournaments, which begin Thursday at the Boise Capital Soccer Complex in Meridian, and the state volleyball tournaments, which will be held at various sites in North Idaho beginning Thursday and Friday.

Soccer

•In 5A boys, Region I champ Lake City (11-4-2) will face District III runner-up Borah (12-5-2). In other matches, District IV-V-VI champ Idaho Falls (16-0-1) takes on District III third-place team Eagle (14-3-4); defending state champ and District III winner Centennial (15-1-3) plays District III fifth-place team Timberline (12-6-3), which defeated Coeur d’Alene 2-1 in overtime in a play-in match; and District IV-V-VI runner-up Twin Falls (9-8) goes against District III fourth-place team Mountain View (10-7-2).

•In 5A girls, Region I champ Lake City (10-7-3) meets defending state champ and District III runner-up Boise (12-4-3). In other games, District IV-V-VI champ Skyline goes against District III third-place finisher Borah; District III champ Timberline (15-1-3) faces Eagle (13-6-3), which shut out Coeur d’Alene 5-0 in a play-in match; and District IV-V-VI runner-up Highland takes on District III fourth-place team Capital (10-9-1).

•In 4A boys, defending state and Region I champ Sandpoint (15-1-2) opens against District III runner-up Nampa (16-2-1), which gave Sandpoint its lone loss. In other matches, District III champ Skyview (13-1-3) faces play-in winner Wood River; District IV-V champ Burley takes on Emmett (13-7-3), which blanked Post Falls 2-0 in a play-in match; and District VI champ Bonneville meets District IV-V runner-up Pocatello.

•In 4A girls, defending state champ Sandpoint (12-5-4), a 3-0 winner over Skyview in a play-in match, faces District IV-V champ Century. In other openers, Region I champ Lakeland (13-4-1) takes on District III runner-up Mountain Home (14-2-4); District III champ Emmett goes against play-in winner Pocatello; and District VI champ Hillcrest (11-5) meets District IV-V runner-up Wood River.

•In 3A boys, District I champ Bonners Ferry (14-2-1) meets defending state champ and District III winner McCall-Donnelly (17-3-0). In other matches, District IV champ Community School takes on Snake River; District V champ American Falls goes against Bliss; and District VI champ North Fremont faces Middleton.

•In 3A girls, District I champ St. Maries (6-12-2) qualified for the first time and will meet 2004 state runner-up and District III champ Payette (10-0-2). In other openers, defending state champ American Falls goes against Middleton; District IV champ Community School takes on Sugar-Salem; and District VI champ Teton faces play-in winner Marsh Valley.

Volleyball

Three of the state tournaments will be held in Kootenai County, beginning Friday. The 16-team 1A tournament, with double the field, starts a day earlier in Lewiston.

•The 1A tourney is divided into four pools with each team playing three matches. The pool winners and runners-up advance to double-elimination play Friday.

Here are the qualifiers and their respective pools:

Pool A (at Lewis-Clark State College) – Garden Valley, Mackay, Carey, Deary; Pool B (at LCSC) – Kootenai, Hagerman, North Gem, Tri-Valley; Pool C (at Lewiston High School) – Wallace, Genesee, Cole Valley, Oakley; Pool D (at LHS) – Shoshone, Troy, Horseshoe Bend, Dietrich.

Shoshone is the defending state champ and Genesee finished runner-up.

•The 5A tourney will be held at Post Falls High School.

Region I champ Lake City (19-10) will take on District IV-V-VI runner-up Skyline of Idaho Falls (36-8) at 11:30 a.m. In other openers, District III champ Eagle (29-5) goes against Borah (18-19), which knocked off Coeur d’Alene in a play-in match; two-time defending state champ Idaho Falls (36-0) meets District III third-place team Boise (18-6); and District III runner-up Timberline (14-6) faces District III fourth-place team Capital (9-8).

•The 4A tourney will be held at Lake City High School.

Region I champ Moscow (25-0) faces District IV-V runner-up Jerome at 10 a.m., and Region I runner-up Lakeland (17-10), which defeated Bishop Kelly in a play-in match, meets 2004 state runner-up and District IV-V champ Century at 11:30. In the other openers, defending state champ Bonneville (25-12) meets District III runner-up Kuna (13-4), and District III champ Skyview (17-0) takes on play-in winner Madison.

•The 3A tourney will be held at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Intermountain League champ and District I runner-up St. Maries (23-4), which defeated Fruitland in a play-in match, will take on District V champ Snake River at 8:30 a.m., and District I champ Timberlake (18-11) goes against defending state champ and District VI winner Shelley at 11:30. In other openers, District IV champ Gooding meets District VI runner-up Sugar-Salem, and District III champ Middleton (16-0) faces play-in winner Bear Lake.
