Central scores 55 points in first half, improves to 4-0 in GNAC

Central Washington scored three defensive touchdowns in 63 seconds and 55 first-half points Saturday en route to a 61-33 rout of Western Oregon (2-6, 0-4) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at Ellensburg.

After freshman quarterback Mike Reilly threw one of his five touchdowns passes to give Central (6-2, 4-0) a 28-13 lead a minute into the second quarter, true freshman Brandon Kennedy (Gonzaga Prep) returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown.

Josh Chance returned a fumble 12 yards for a second defensive score on the ensuing possession. Kennedy ran back an interception 30 yards for a touchdown just 13 seconds later.

Junior Chris Burch (Inchelium) also had a solid defensive effort, with five tackles, including two for loss, a forced fumble and a sack.

Reilly threw for a career-high 341 yards on 27-of-43 passing without an interception, breaking Jon Kitna’s freshman passing record with 2,245 yards for the season.

The Wildcats also set school records for points in a quarter with 34 in the second, as well as points in a half.

Western Washington 28, Humboldt State 24: At Arcata, Calif., Duncan Sherrard scored his second touchdown of the game with 8:47 remaining to give the Vikings (4-4, 3-1) a GNAC victory. Sherrard ran for 149 yards, while Jake Carlyle added 79 and a first-quarter touchdown. Blake Moorman led Humboldt State (4-4, 1-3) with 321 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Linfield 62, Puget Sound 7: At McMinnville, Ore., Brent Elliott threw for 364 yards and six touchdowns to four different receivers for the No. 1 Wildcats (6-0, 3-0), who won their 22nd straight Northwest Conference game. Casey Allen and Brad McKechnie each caught a pair of touchdowns, and Allen tied the Linfield school record with his 176th career reception. The Wildcats dominated from the outset, scoring 48 first-half points and amassing 367 yards of total offense before halftime. The Loggers (3-4, 1-3) turned the ball over five times in the contest.

Pacific Lutheran 28, Southern Oregon 17: At Hillsboro, Ore., the Division III Lutes improved to 2-4 with a victory over the NAIA Raiders (0-7)
