Cougs deserve loyalty

The Spokesman-Review

In reading Mr. John Blanchette’s article on the WSU vs. Stanford game, it was quite clear that while The Spokesman-Review had a sports writer, they sure didn’t have a good sport. For Mr. Blanchette to assume followers of WSU football would stay home on Saturdays because the team lost its first two Pac-10 games plus faces greater challenges during the rest of the year, shows us where his insight, values and judgments really are.

After reading his article, it would appear that Mr. Blanchette is a meat fisherman – that is, a man who feels if he can’t bring home a load of fish, the day was wasted and so why go out again. Never mind about enjoying the beauty of the day or the fun of trying to cast that fly right where you want it or the challenge of trolling your lure at the right speed, at the right depth, in the right place. With no big catch, I guess Mr. Blanchette would prefer yard work, having no desire to enjoy another beautiful day on the lake or stream.

However, most WSU football fans realize how fortunate we are. Not only do we follow a team that has been competitive for the last 10 years, but we also have a team that is good enough to bring us some of the country’s best football teams to watch just a 1 1/2 -hour drive from Spokane. Now I will concede that Mr. Blanchette is a talented “cutesy pie” writer who has falsely assumed that most fans will stay home. However, maybe we would all be better off if Mr. Blanchette would put a rake in his hand and stay home for the rest of the season.

P.S.: Wrong again, John! There were 35,117 fans at the UCLA-WSU game last Saturday.
