Eagles sweep away Wildcats

Crystal Johnson and Lizzy Mellor each had 11 kills as Eastern Washington’s offense was on fire in a 30-20, 30-17, 30-19 sweep of Weber State in Big Sky Conference volleyball action Saturday on Reese Court.

Johnson hit .500, Mellor .346 and Addie Webster, who finished with 10 kills, hit .409 as the Eagles (16-6, 6-3) hit .418 for the match, while holding the Wildcats (10-12, 5-4) to a .113 mark.

Ashley Jensen had eight kills and a .583 attack percentage for EWU, and Kerri Beck finished with six kills, a .417 hitting percentage and a match-high four blocks.

•Mira Djuric had 17 kills as Oregon swept Washington State 30-25, 30-24, 31-29 in Pacific-10 Conference action in Eugene, Ore.

Jen Barcus had a strong night, leading WSU (8-14, 1-8) with 14 kills and a .344 hitting percentage. Natalia Owens had 10 kills and six blocks and Te’ara Epps finished with 10 blocks as the Cougars outblocked the Ducks (11-9, 1-8) 15-9.

•Julie Rubenstein had 17 kills and Sophia Milo added 16 and a .737 attack percentage as Pepperdine swept Gonzaga 30-26, 30-18, 30-25 in West Coast Conference action in Malibu, Calif.

Gonzaga (10-14, 2-5) was led by Becky Jones, who finished with 11 kills. Setter Heather Dunn had 25 assists, 11 digs and eight kills to go with a .438 attack percentage for the Bulldogs.

Breegan Mulligan added 10 kills and hit .529 for the Waves (13-8, 5-2).

•Brie Hagerty and Christal Morrison each had 12 kills as second-ranked Washington hit .407 in a 30-24, 30-18, 30-14 sweep of Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., that earned head coach Jim McLaughlin his 100th win with the Huskies.

Sanja Tomasevic and Alesha Deesing added nine kills for UW (18-0, 9-0 Pac-10), which held advantages in kills (56-35), digs (43-36) and blocks (9.5-6) over OSU (7-8, 3-6).

•Natalie Danielson finished with 14 kills as No. 18 Whitworth beat Pacific 23-30, 30-22, 30-13, 30-22 in Northwest Conference action in Forest Grove, Ore.

Julie Marsh added 12 kills for the Pirates (16-2, 11-1). Megan Van Domelen led the Tigers (8-14, 1-11) with 12 kills.

•Vanessa Fleetwood finished with 17 kills as Community Colleges of Spokane held off Treasure Valley 30-27, 20-30, 30-24, 30-28 in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges action in Ontario, Ore.

Fleetwood, a Mead High grad, also added four aces for the Sasquatch (23-10, 8-2). Andrea Light chipped in with 54 assists for CCS.

•Haley Larsen led the Vandals with 15 kills as Idaho (11-10, 3-5) snapped a three-game losing streak by sweeping Louisiana Tech (15-10, 2-7) 30-24, 30-21, 30-22 in Western Athletic Conference action in Ruston, La.

Men’s soccer

Matthew Dallman scored with a little over a minute left as Portland rallied late to tie Gonzaga 2-2 in West Coast Conference action in Portland.

Luke Miller gave the Bulldogs (3-6-4, 1-3-2) the lead in the 24th minute before Patrick Mooney evened things up for the Pilots (4-7-1, 2-4-1) in the 55th minute.

Mark Stock gave the lead back to GU in the 60th minute, but Gonzaga keeper Vito Higgins, who finished with nine saves, mishandled a cross from UP’s Michael Gavin in the 89th minute, the ball falling to Dallman for the equalizer.

•Todd Sabrowski scored twice in the first half and Kevin Bostock made six saves as No. 6 Whitworth handed Linfield its first defeat in 10 NWC matches, beating the Wildcats 2-1 in McMinnville, Ore.

Sabrowski scored in the sixth minute, one-touching a cross from Skye Henderson from 16 yards out to open the scoring. Linfield (7-4-4, 6-1-3) struck next, Chris Pradis scoring in the 28th minute. But Sabrowski ensured the win for the Pirates (12-1-1, 9-0-1) by slotting home a penalty kick in the 44th minute.

•Nick de Graffenreid and Keith Kirsch scored early, but the Sasquatch couldn’t hold the lead as Community Colleges of Spokane (8-8-4, 8-4-3, 27 points) tied Southwestern Oregon (6-3-5 in league, 22 points) 2-2 in NWAACC action at Spokane Falls CC.

Women’s soccer

Linfield scored twice in the second half as the Wildcats shut out Whitworth 2-0 in NWC action in McMinnville, Ore.

Chelsey Stoltz scored in the 59th minute and Amber Calcagno in the 85th. Whitworth (5-6-3, 4-5-2) outshot Linfield (5-8-2, 3-7-1) 17-15, but couldn’t get anything by Wildcats goalie Allison Cartmill, who finished with six saves.

•Heather Wilson had a goal and an assist and Amy Danielson had three saves as CCS (14-3-3, 10-2-3) shut out Southwestern Oregon 2-0 in an NWAACC matchup at SFCC.

Rowing

Gonzaga’s men’s varsity 8 won the Head of the Spokane Regatta, covering the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 47 seconds en route to an 8-second win over Washington State.

WSU captured the top two spots in the women’s varsity 8, the Cougars’ second 8 finishing first in 16:56 and their third varsity 8 finishing in 17:12. GU’s varsity 8 took third in 17:19.

Gonzaga also dedicated the Harry A. Green Indoor Rowing Facility as the new home of GU rowing. The school’s crew teams moved from the now torn-down postal annex, which was on the site of Gonzaga’s new baseball stadium, to the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Golf

Washington State All-American Anastasia Kostina shot a 66 to move into a tie for second and tie the course record at the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate on the Stanford (Calif.) Golf Course.

Kostina also tied Kim Welch for the school record for a single-round score.
