Freshman Megan Hyte scored an overtime goal in the 100th minute Friday to give Washington State (3-0) a 3-2 non-conference women’s soccer comeback win over 11th-ranked Tennessee (0-2) at Knoxville, Tenn.

Hyte launched a shot from the left side of the box for her third consecutive match-winning goal.

Carmen Anderson scored off a penalty kick in the 84th minute and Jennie Kunc blasted in a shot from the right wing at 85:14 to allow WSU to tie the Volunteers.

•Tiera Como (East Valley High) recorded her team-record seventh career shutout and senior midfielder Beth Russell scored her seventh career goal as Eastern Washington (1-2) posted a 2-0 win over Akron (1-3-1) to open the New Mexico Nike Classic at Albuquerque.

Russell, who scored in the eighth minute, moved into a tie as the Eagles’ all-time career points leader (19). Sophomore Cyeeta Mott also scored for EWU, which meets the host Lobos on Sunday.

•Senior Cristan Higa scored in the 76th minute to allow host Oregon (2-1-1) to forge a 1-all tie with Gonzaga (2-0-1) in non-conference play at Eugene, Ore.

GU sophomore Christine Soma scored her second goal of the season at 57:08.

•Junior Eija Hodgin scored her first career goal, on the first career assist from junior Morgan Bunday, as Idaho (1-1) posted a 1-0 non-conference win at Portland State (1-2).

Volleyball

Nikki Havens and Felice Yocopis combined for 35 kills and 30 digs while leading Idaho State (1-1) to a 3-0 sweep over Washington State (1-1) in the opening day of the Aggie Invitational at Davis, Calif.

Jen Barcus (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls High) had 14 kills and hit .333 for WSU.

The Bengals outhit WSU .323 to .152.

WSU will play Toledo and UC Davis today.

•Lizzy Mellor (Colfax) had 10 kills and Julie Reis added nine kills and a .450 attack percentage to lead Eastern Washington to a 3-0 win over Robert Morris (1-3) in the first day of the University of North Florida Labor Day Classic at Jacksonville.

Kerri Beck (Gonzaga Prep) had nine block assists and .556 hitting for the Eagles (2-1). Andrea Verdoljak added five aces and 13 digs.

EWU plays Charleston Southern and Jacksonville today.

•Sophomore Becky Jones had 14 kills in both matches as Gonzaga (3-2) swept Morehead State (2-2) and Florida International (2-2) during the Over the Mountain Invitational at Boiling Springs, N.C.

The Zags hit .312 in the first match and .438 in the second. GU sophomore Briawna Mueller had six blocks in each match and Heather Dunn added 74 assists on the day.

GU meets Birmingham-Southern and host Gardner-Webb today.

•Kati Tikker totaled 13 kills and Saxony Brown had 34 assists as Idaho (3-1) notched a 3-0 win over Coastal Carolina (1-1) at the Loyola Marymount Four Points Sheraton-LAX Classic tournament at Los Angeles.

•Division III top-ranked Washington University (2-0) swept No. 24 Whitworth 3-0 during the opening day of the WU Classic at St. Louis, handing coach Rich Luenemann his 800th career win.

The Pirates (1-1), who play twice today, opened with a sweep of Illinois Wesleyan, powered by 19 kills from Julie Marsh (Cheney High). On the day for Whitworth, Bekah Hornor (Mead High) had 56 assists and Holly Coleman (Mt. Spokane High) added 37 digs.

•Senior Sanja Tomasevic finished with 12 kills and a .600 hitting percentage as second-ranked Washington (2-0) notched a 3-0 sweep of Davidson (0-2) at the Portland Nike Invitational.

•Nicolette Wittwer (Mead High) totaled 16 kills and 16 digs to carry Community Colleges of Spokane to a 3-1 non-conference win over Shoreline at Seattle.

Andrea Light added 36 assists and four aces as the Sasquatch handed coach Jenni Rosselli a win in her debut.

Men’s soccer

Luke Miller (Sandpoint), Grant Lundberg (Lewis and Clark High) and George Josten each had one goal and one assist to lead Gonzaga to a 3-2 season-opening win over host Loyola at the Fr. Leo Sweeney Jesuit Cup at River Forest, Ill.

GU started a pair of newcomers – sophomore defender Austin Washington (Ferris High), a transfer from Whitworth, and freshman midfielder Bryan Mullaney.
