Fats Domino and his family spent two days with Louisiana State University’s quarterback after being rescued from the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina.

“I’m not sure where they are headed, but I just feel better knowing that they are OK,” quarterback JaMarcus Russell said in a news release.

The 77-year-old R&B legend was reported missing Thursday by his longtime agent, but actually had been rescued by boat Monday.

He was taken to the Superdome in New Orleans, then later to LSU’s basketball arena in Baton Rouge, where he was reunited with his family.

They ended up at Russell’s two-bedroom apartment with some 20 other hurricane refugees. Domino and his family are friends with Russell’s girlfriend’s family.

The LSU press release quoted Domino as saying: “Tell the people of New Orleans that I’m safe. I wish I was able to still be there with them, but I hope to see them soon.”

The famous share their fortunes

In the latest celebrity hurricane relief developments, the Dave Matthews Band will perform a Sept. 12 concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre with all profits to go to charities supporting victims of Katrina.

And among the musicians making cash donations to relief efforts are rappers Sean “Diddy” Combs and Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, who have pledged $1 million to the American Red Cross; singer Celine Dion, who along with the partners in her Las Vegas show have done the same; and pop star Hilary Duff, who’s giving $200,000 to the Red Cross and $50,000 to USA Harvest, which is supplying food to shelters.

Actor Nicolas Cage, who has a home in New Orleans, also is pitching in $1 million for the Red Cross.

Roker’s under the weather

In the midst of one of the biggest weather stories ever to hit the country, weatherman Al Roker has been missing in action at NBC’s “Today” show, sidelined by a ruptured disc that required back surgery.

Roker, 51, said in a posting on his Web site that he was recuperating at home following an operation to “relieve the pressure on my sciatic nerve and in turn, ease intense pain in my left leg.” No word yet on when he’ll be back on the air.

We hear they’re not so hot these days

Pop group 98 Degrees is reuniting today at a rally to support band member Justin Jeffre’s campaign for mayor of Cincinnati.

“We may sing an a cappella song – possibly two, probably not much more than that,” Jeffre said. “We don’t want to give people the wrong impression.”

The group last performed in concert at Madison Square Garden in New York the night before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Mississippi Delta resident Morgan Freeman, on organizing an online Red Cross benefit auction: “It’s sort of well-known that anytime any catastrophe happens anywhere in the world, they can count on the United States for help. Now, charity begins at home, so we call on anybody who has even the thought (of giving) to get beyond the thought and help these people.”
