Saints to face Giants in N.Y.

Associated Press

The New Orleans Saints, driven from the Superdome by Hurricane Katrina, will play their home opener against the New York Giants at Giants Stadium.

It is not clear, however, when the game will be played.

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said the game, scheduled for Sept. 18, is being moved to the Giants’ home in East Rutherford, N.J.

The New York Jets, who share the stadium with the Giants, are scheduled to play at home against Miami on Sept. 18. As a result, the Giants-Saints game most likely will be played Saturday, Sept. 17, or the following Monday.

The league said it was also possible the game could be played as part of a doubleheader Sunday, with the one game at 1 p.m. (EDT) and the other at night. The Jets are scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m.

“We are in the process of working out the specific arrangements, including the day and kickoff time and plans for television coverage,” Tagliabue said. He added that information on tickets will be announced in a few days by the Giants.

He said the Saints and Giants had agreed to donate part of the gate receipts from the game to the hurricane relief fund.

Knox into ‘Ring of Honor’

Former coach Chuck Knox will be inducted into the Seattle Seahawks’ “Ring of Honor,” the team said Friday before an exhibition game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Knox coached Seattle from 1983-1991 and compiled an 80-63 record in Seattle. He ranks seventh in league history with 193 career victories.

Knox led Seattle to the playoffs four times, and was named NFL coach of the year in 1983 and 1984. Seattle reached the AFC title game after the 1983 season.

He will be inducted on Sept. 25 when the Seahawks host the Arizona Cardinals.

Bengals 38, Colts 0

At Cincinnati, Carson Palmer led the Bengals to touchdowns on their first two drives, going 6 of 7 for 107 yards before calling it a night and Cincinnati rolled past Indianapolis. The Bengals scored on their first three possessions, piling up a 256-16 advantage in yards. The winless Colts rested their entire starting offense and all but two starters on defense.

Lions 21, Bills 7

At Orchard Park, N.Y., Shawn Bryson and Artose Pinner rushed for touchdowns and safety Terrence Holt, with an assist from Dre’ Bly, returned an interception for a score to lead Detroit to its first preseason victory.

The victory was overshadowed by Lions’ backup quarterback Jeff Garcia’s broken leg, leaving the team with no experienced backup behind Joey Harrington.

Rams 27, Chiefs 23

At St. Louis, Ryan Fitzpatrick, a rookie from Harvard, may have solidified his bid to become the third-string quarterback, completing 12 of 22 for 195 yards, one interception and two touchdowns as the Rams edged the Chiefs.

Broncos 30, Cardinals 21

At Tempe, Ariz., Bradlee Van Pelt, a second-year pro from Colorado State who won the No. 2 quarterback job behind Jake Plummer, completed 16 of 26 passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns to lead Denver over Arizona.
