A wireless broadband technology called WiMax could be an affordable way to bring the Internet to poor and rural areas worldwide — or not.

WiMax has long been touted as a way to open up the Internet to everyone, not just those who have access to high-speed service over telephone or cable lines. So far, however, it hasn’t moved much beyond trials and carefully scripted demonstrations.
