Celebrities and musical artists ranging from Neil Young to Chris Rock have signed on to appear in Friday’s multinetwork “Shelter from the Storm” concert to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.

In addition to Young, Sheryl Crow, Alicia Keys, Paul Simon, the Dixie Chicks, Randy Newman and Rod Stewart are slated to perform on the hourlong special, which airs at 8 p.m. Friday on all the broadcast networks and now about 20 cable channels.

The commercial-free special, similar to the post-9/11 “America: A Tribute to Heroes,” will air live to the eastern half of the country and on tape delay in the West.

Celebrities who will appear on the special to appeal for donations and pay tribute to rescue workers include Gulf Coast natives Sela Ward and Ellen DeGeneres, Jack Nicholson, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston and Ray Romano as well as Rock.

The six major broadcast networks will be joined by PBS and PAX in carrying the concert, which will be staged at Sony studios in New York and Los Angeles. Cable channels carrying “Shelter from the Storm” include FX, USA, TBS, E!, Bravo, Trio, ABC Family, the TV Guide Channel and several Fox Sports regional networks.

Joel Gallen, who produced “A Tribute to Heroes,” will also executive produce “Shelter from the Storm.” Information on how to donate hasn’t been finalized yet.

Cable network BET will air its own telethon Friday at 7:30 p.m., featuring several hip-hop and R&B artists. Sister music networks MTV, VH1 and CMT also will simulcast a relief concert Saturday at 8 p.m.
