Moran United Methodist marks 125th year

After 125 years of worship, the Moran United Methodist Church, 3601 E. 65th Ave., is celebrating with a weekend full of activities.

On Saturday, from 1 p.m., the church members will gather to discuss and share their history, and everyone is invited to bring memorabilia of the church and community surrounding it.

Previous pastors will be on hand, and there will be a display of antiques and church history.

At 1:30 p.m., history organizer Harriet Van Wyck will give a tour of the church, and there will be outdoor games.

Anyone interested in touring the church cemetery can do so at 2 p.m.

From 3 to 4 p.m. there will be a beard-growing contest, a period attire review, which will include wedding dresses worn by women who were married at the church, and music.

On Sunday, everyone is encouraged to come in period costume for the 9 a.m. adult Bible study and Preacher Betty Caviezel will arrive on horseback at 9:45 a.m.

The worship service will begin at 10 a.m., and there will be a potluck lunch at 11:30 a.m.

The rest of the afternoon will include more history displays and opportunities to speak with former pastors of the church.

Centennial celebration

Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third Ave., will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its building on Sunday.

The original church opened in 1879, but was destroyed by a fire at the turn of the century.

The church was rebuilt in 1905 and was the site of the first Father’s Day.

Worship services will begin at 10:30 a.m., and a coffee hour will be at noon, which will include the opening of the church cornerstone and displays of historical artifacts.

Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. by the Rockwood Retirement Communities. The cost for lunch is $5.

Concert

Faith Bible Church, 600 W. Cora Ave., will present Christian singer/songwriter Matthew West in concert today at 7 p.m.

West will perform songs from his CD, “History.” Shawn McDonald and Paul Wright also will perform.

Tickets, available through TicketsWest at 325-SEAT, are $13 in advance, $10.50 per person in groups of 10 or more, $16 at the door and $17.50 for Gold Circle seating.

10 years of music

Jim Tevenan of St. Augustine Parish, 428 W. 19th Ave., is celebrating his 10th year as parish music director Sunday at 4 p.m. with a recital at the church.

The performance will include violinist Elizabeth Lund, cellist Jennifer Cox, and flutist Craig Johnson. The group will perform German, French and American music selections from the past three centuries.

Admission is free, and donations will be accepted.

Workshops and classes

“ Plymouth Congregational Church, 1502 W. Eighth Ave., is offering a workshop series, “Family Relationship Outreach Series: When it Happens in Your Family.”

The series will begin Sunday at 10 a.m. with a discussion of “Mental Disorders and the Family.”

Subsequent classes will be Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.

“ Ancient Traditions Community Church, 1928 E. Rich Ave., will begin offering the class, “Recovering Christianity” Tuesday and subsequent Tuesdays through Nov. 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The class will discuss faith versus belief, truth versus dogma and how to live what Jesus taught.

There is a suggested donation of $5 per class.

“ Candess Campbell is presenting a weekly “Sacred Contracts” class, starting today and continuing through Nov. 3 from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. at 2317 W. Clarke Ave.

Back-to-school revival service

Crosswind Church, 17302 N. Newport Highway, is presenting a back-to-school revival.

Vern Weaver will speak at the services, which will be at 10:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday and at 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

All Nations Warriors for Christ will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Central Seventh-day Adventist Church, 828 W. Spofford Ave.

Hurricane relief

Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., is taking donations on behalf of the United Methodist Committee on Relief to benefit survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

All donations will benefit relief efforts.

Donations will be accepted in the church office or may be mailed to the church. Checks should be made out to Manito UMC.

Rummage sale

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., will hold a rummage sale Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Items for sale will include furniture, tools, clothes, books and jewelry.

The proceeds will benefit outreach agencies in the area.

The Christian Singles Fellowship‘s monthly meeting will be Saturday at 7 p.m. at North Addison Baptist Church, 6120 N. Addison St.
