Friday is a big night on Euclid Avenue. That’s when the Gonzaga Prep Bulldogs will play their first football game on their campus field.

The lights will shine, the stands will fill and the Sprinturf surface will be used in varsity football competition for the first time.

“This a monumental moment in the school’s 100-plus year history,” Prep athletic director Paul Manfred said. “With the school traditionally having a successful program, bringing that back to our campus is exciting for everybody involved.”

For you trivia buffs, the Pups’ (2-0, 1-0 in the GSL) first on-campus opponent will be Cheney (1-1, 0-1).

Katrina donations at EV-CV

Their minds may be on high-school football, but fans at the Central Valley-East Valley game on Friday can show that their hearts are with the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

A special collection will be made during the game, as part of CV’s Hurricane Katrina Relief Drive to assist children displaced by the storm with necessary school supplies.

Donations can include money, or school and art supplies, including crayons, pencils, paper, colored paper, markers, colored pencils, scissors, glue or coloring books. The school is also seeking gently used backpacks, toys, books, and clothing.

For more information call the school at 228-5100.

Who’s up first?

It wasn’t the way a rookie expected his girls soccer head coaching career to start.

Lewis and Clark’s Casey Curtis thought the Tigers were playing Sandpoint in a non-league match on Monday. Lake City showed up.

“When I took over the program this summer and Kenny (Krestian) gave me all the information, he told me he made a verbal agreement with Sandpoint to come here,” Curtis explained.

He called to double-check and was assured the Bulldogs would be at Hart Field.

On Monday morning, Curtis said he was called by activities coordinator Dan Close and told Lake City was expecting to be there. The Tigers and Timberwolves had played a year ago.

“I’d never spoken to anyone at Lake City and I told Dan, ‘not to my knowledge,’ ” Curtis said. “I called Kenny and he didn’t remember. I was a little surprised just because I didn’t know anything about it.”

The three schools worked things out. The two LCs played, Idaho beating Washington 3-1, and the Tigers will travel to Sandpoint Sept. 26.

Curtis got the Tigers coaching job when Krestian became men’s coach at Community Colleges of Spokane.

Road rash

“It was like getting chased by a mummy.”

That was Mt. Spokane activities vice principal John Miller’s take on himself following an accident last summer while motorcycling in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Miller was rear-ended after the bike caravan he was in slowed down, but the rider behind him didn’t.

“There was quite a bit of motorcycle traffic through the canyon,” Miller said. “He was looking up or something and never let off the throttle.”

Miller was tossed off his bike, skidded on the asphalt and suffered a case of road rash.
